The Trooper or Weekend Warrior?

Hi! Which Maiden songs you like the most: the hits or the not-so-popular songs? I like the not-so-popular ones partly because the hits are always played on the radio, partly because many hits are actually worse than the unknown songs. For example, Die With Your Boots On and The Prisoner are actually a lot better than The Trooper, The Number of the Beast or Run to the Hills...

The reason why The Trooper is popular in the first place is that it's a great song. Sure the prisoner etc. are good but The Trooper is really good, just like the Flight of Icarus, which is on the same album and is also a hit from the album. Weekend warrior is great too, though from that album, Fear of the Dark, I really like Afraid to shoot Strangers, aside from the other songs, though what I don't like about that album is Steve Harris' bass tone. I think he shifted to another bass guitar, probably a jazz bass, since it has more twang on that album. I prefer his bass tone on older albums like Piece of Mind. But that's just me. Other than that, the songs are still great.

That's true. A song has to be good to be a hit but I like some non-hits more. Maybe I'm a little different from the Maiden fans who made The Trooper so big hit... If I could have decided, the hit would have been Die With Your Boots On But the hits are all hits for a reason, the only album I think has the wrong choices for singles is Killers. I think the singles should have been Killers and Wrathchild instead of Purgatory and Twilight Zone (not in the original album but I still count it as a single from Killers). Nothing wrong with those songs, though. And I think I know why you don't like the bass in Fear of the Dark. On that album (at least on the tour) Steve used a different bass: it had a rosewood freatboard instead of the regular all-maple neck. It might have been a little different in some other way too but that's the only thing that comes to my mind.

Happens to me too sometimes with some new bands, also when I first heard Maiden

Yeah. He pretty much used another bass guitar. I could still remember when I first listened to Die with your Boots on. I thought Flight of Icarus was my favorite song on that album. Then I listened to Die with your boots on and thought that's my favorite track until I heard The trooper. My favorite track changed as I listened to the rest of the album until I thought To tame a Land was my favorite track. Then I realized all the songs on the album are just great! Up the irons!

oh so true my friend.....they're all great songs , but one of my all time favorites to listen to and to play the bass on, has got to be "Revelations" another great one that didn't get too much radio play (not that any Iron Maiden songs got much radio play here in the states) is "Invaders"

Yeah, Revelations is very nice to play on bass. By the way, did you know that they have NEVER played Invaders live? I think they should, it's a great song...

i just did a search on that and i came up with: "Iron Maiden have only played Invaders live one time, and that was in Auckland, NZ 1992" it's a guitar tabs site.....if you want to look, here's the site: http://www.guitaretab.com/i/iron-maiden/8818.html

I will always love 'Wasted Years'. I also agree that the non-hit songs are sometime much better than the hit. Also love the older album of Iron Maiden mainly the first 4 album. Paul DiAnno is also not a bad singer. Songs like 'Prodigal Son' 'Killers' are also good.

Yeah, I love Killers! It's so cool to play with bass Even Blaze isn't a bad singer, his voice just wasn't the best for Maiden...

I agree, the radio singles are just a way to get the word out to the non Maiden fans. They are just a taste of the real Metal only found on the CDs.

Yeah, that's SO true. I think that Die With Your Boots on should be the hit, not The Trooper. But I might not like what most people like and they needed some hits back then so I kinda understand why they chose what they chose to release as singles.

I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan and I have to say I like all of their music the same, because at any given time the songs that normally may not rank high on my list of Maiden songs, may be my favorite songs for a while and the same goes with the songs that normally rank higher. Where I live we only have one radio station that is dedicated to hard rock and metal and still, if and when you hear Iron Maiden, it is either The Trooper or Run To The Hills, so their songs definitely don't get much radio play here.

I agree with you, they have no songs that would be much better than the others. There are only a few that are always better than the others. We also have only one rock station here but they play Maiden songs at least a few times every day so if you listen to the radio, you'll hear Trooper and Run to the Hills every single day...

Yeah, Bring You Daughter... is one of my favourites too, no matter that the single got straight to number one in the UK... Can I Play With Madness is very good too.

For me Die With Your Boots On is the big hit. Even the Sonata Arctica cover is really cool for me. Afraid to Shoot Strangers is the other favourite, but that's a well known hit. There are few Bruce Dickinson songs as well, it's worth to check out his solo albums!
