Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?

Well bra comes from the word brassiere so that is why it is probably singular as is was probably shortened, with panties no idea, I mean it is always a pair of panties maybe since it comes from a plural like pantalettes or pantaloons or knickers but all are plurals. Who knows were the names come from, in wikipedia in the undergarment section they have various links they are not giving away answers though, this is a fun question.

Well probably because in the westernized past women would wear more than one undergarment in that area, such as "panty hose" and her underwear, and perhaps other confusing articles of clothing that are not necessary, so I can see why they would make it pluralized and just categorize everything under "panties." That's the most logical reason I could think of that would explain the singular and plural difference. Happy mylotting!
