Would you or have you ever bought a dog from the pound?

A few months ago I bought a puppy from the pound. He is the sweetest thing and provides hours entertainment for my other dog also. They run around the yard chasing each other and also in the house. Now, when I first got him, he wouldn't play and was scared of toys. He had no clue how to play. I was the first one in line that wanted him and there were six others after me. I went three times to see him until he was allowed to be adopted. I was so tickeled to bring him home. So, have any of you bought a puppy or dog from the pound? Or just from a breeder? Or from a pet store?

My fiance got our Pit Bull Thor from his buddy who breeded them. We got our pup Dozer from the Clarion Humane Society. We both agreed that if we ever get another dog it will be through the humane society. Escpically from kill shelters. The more animals that can be saved the better. I do not by from pet stores for cats or dogs. They are from mills, and they aren't treated properly. The only thing I have ever gotten from the pet store is my guinea pig "pig, pig". I think it is better to adopt animals from shelters, because it gives them a second chance, and a lot of times you find the sweetest animals.

I am glad that you are getting a special pup from the pound. I think that they know that they are getting a second chance and love you so much more for that.

I have gotten all my animals from the pound or rescue groups. Our current dog was found running along a busy highway. When I went to see her with her "foster family", she climbed up in my Jimmy with my three kids. How could I not take her home? Turns out, they had been the ones that had found her but couldn't keep her. They had only had her for about a week, but the dog had pyometria so badly, that when I took her to the vet, they had to do emergency surgery! I will never "BUY" a dog from a breeder, puppy mill pet store or petsmart. I will ALWAYS and forever adopt an animal that is in need of a new beginning and afford them a chance at a new life.

Our very first dog was from the Humane Society which in those days was the equivalent of the pound. Our last 5 or 6 have been rescue puppies but paying a huge chunk of change is not in my budget for any pet.

I've never bought from a breeder, only the pound or someone giving them away before they have to take them to the pound. I think those make better "pets". Dogs from a breeder tend to be only good for breeding and stuff, not for playing with. You can also get them too inbred and that causes problems. The pet stores are usually from puppy mills and that's no way to treat a puppy. I wouldn't buy from a pet store just because I'd like them to quit doing things that way.

I love the idea of getting your beloved friend from the pound. I have gone and fell in love with many from there. I have to honestly say though that I am a sucker for a baby puppy. So I have gotten my boys from breeders. I take the runts that need the extra TLC or ones that the breeder doesn't think will make it. I have lost one so far. I am all for saving pound puppies. They just usually in my area have older dogs that are too big for my liking. I like little guys. I love to hear the happy stories that the pound puppies bring. Even though I have never bought from a store, but they all need love no matter where they come from.

I never got a dog but we have gotten several cats, we've had very good luck and whenever I need an animal that is the first place I look. It's a very shamefull thing in this country that we can't control out pet population and so many are put to sleep because of that. We always make sure all of ours are nutured and any strays that we can catch get that treatment also. Most of the the time the strays are just to wild to catch. Enjoy your new pup.

I have had 14 dogs in my life time and all but 2 of them were rescued from the pound or animal shelters. I do not believe in buying dogs unless it must have a pedigree for breeding or showing. This way I am saving lives and not supporting the inhumane puppy mills.

I normally have bought most of my dogs from the humane society. A few I got free from a farmer who did not know enough to get their dog fixed. I think everyone should volunteer at a shelter for at least a week. They will know what the right thing is to do. I volunteer at a local no kill animal sanctuary.(only I normally take care of the cats) Too many people think animals are disposible.

Never got a dog buy hubby lost his cat right before hurricane katrina and one day my daughter and I stopped by the pond to see what they had and we didn't see anything that interested us, but on the way out there was this cat. He is big and white with black spots that cover his eyes, we adopted him and brought him home. My hubby thought wee was bringing home a kitten. Well let me tell you this is the cat from Hell. He is the funniest cat I think we ever had, he has gotten up on the kitchen table and has all the fruit that is round out on the floor rolling them around like a ball. He pushed off everything on the bookcase and now lays up there. You can get some truly amazing pets at the pound, they are just looking for someone to love them.

I've had nearly every animal I've owned from 'rescue' centres. I prefer to go to the breed rescues for dogs, because I know what I want, most have been Shepherds or Retrievers and often a cross of both! Most have been young adults who are suddenly too big or too boistrous to handle, and 2 have been older animals with health problems. I can't remember a time there hasn't been a dog or cat in the house. The only cats I've had that weren't rescued were the Siamese I used to breed. The latest is a beautiful German Shepherd who after 12 months is a happy, well built, girl who is a joy to own. She was a 3 yr old 'puppy-farm' breeding animal and kept in a shed with several other dogs. In many ways it's been like bringing up a puppy as she hasn't had a lot of human contact and had never lived in a house. It was love at first sight for me and she's my near constant companion. I'm glad your boy is settling in so well and has a friend to play with. It's great to see them discover life is fun and those scary things are nothing to worry about! May you all have a great life together.

Our last 2 dogs came from a shelter. The first one was a puppy that somebody couldn't keep. When I was growing up also we either took in dogs that other people couldn't keep or shelter animals.

Also, if you rescue a 'mutt' from the pound, you generally have less of a chance of them acquiring breed related problems.

My beagle was given to us from a friend of my mother's at work for free, but when I ever do get another dog I am planning on adopting one. I'll adopt any age also, it doesn't matter if it's a puppy or a senior. I think I will stay away from pet stores because I've heard too many bad things about them, ex. puppy mills.

I think it's great that you saved this pooch from the pound. I recommended more people do the same. I, myself adopted a beautiful dobie/lab back in 2005 and feel so blessed to have her, and I know she feels the same. What a spoiled pooch she is! :)

My family has only bought dogs from breeders and friends of the family. But I would love to offer a loving home to a dog from the pound. I think I owe it to one dog. When I was 7, my uncle bought two dogs for me and my sister. They were great but we were very little and childish. We couldn't handle them when they became big. We gave one of them away to a friend and the other to a pound. I felt miserable and I am still sad about it. I know many people do it too and I hate how I am one of them. Thoughts of my poor dog waiting for someone to love him and how he was scared as they took him away... I will never forgive myself.

I have gotten three dogs over the years from my local pound and they have been the best dogs that I have ever owned. My dogs were like yours and actually our current dog is afraid of almost everything except other dogs. He is great though and a wonderful addition to our family.

Getting your dog from the pound is an admirable thing to do. You quite often get very well adjusted dogs. Pure bred dogs can be quite high stung and prone to health problems. By using the pound you improve yours and the dogs life a great deal. I have used a breeder paid 500 dollars to have my dog get cancer after 4 years and I've resuced a dog. Both have been great experiences. In short. GET A dog!
