how long do you keep your left-over food in your refrigerator?

most people have the habit of cooking more than what they consume and left them at the ref for later sometimes for rotting. my mama for instance would keep food more than their supposed "shelf-life". some of them even go way after the best before dates. isn't it such a waste?

Only 2 days. After that...it becomes a treat for my dogs or goes out in the trash.

hi gargoyle, do you need more dogs? see i could rent you the neighbor's. hehe. kidding aside, that's admirable of you to have manage your left-overs that way. i'm sure your ref does smell like haven for snackers. thanks for your response, happy posting.

This is one thing I am so ashamed of. I am a very clean freak, probebly O.C.D. material. The only bad habit I have is leaving my food in the fridge forever! This is how it starts. I dont want to throw the leftovers out because I really believe that I will eat them. For some reason I end up not feeling hungry for them. So they sit. Then they sit some more. Then one day, I start to smell something. It's that food. So, instead of opening it up because I am scared to look at what it morphed into, I end up throwing it away, container and all!It is a horrible habit. I not only stink up the fridge but over the years have lost alot of money in tupperware.

hi, marlena. whew, that's some penny on the black bag. and could just imagine the smell of the whole storage chest. this might be an unwanted advice, but it's time you save those tupperwares. not only will you save yourself some cash but you will also save the earth. happy day!

Depending on what it is, I usually only keep it for 3 or 4 days tops. Something made with chicken I'll only keep for two days after it's cooked. More than likely, when there's leftovers, I'll transfer them to a tupperware or something and throw it into the freezer for another day when I don't feel much like cooking. I hate to see food waste!

to put the left-over in freezer could indeed stop the growth of the bacteria in there. but i'm sure since they already started populating before you placed them there, they will almost instantly work again immediately after you thaw it. bi tyhink that would be brilliant for some kind of food. thanks for posting a response here, and stay jolly joyful one!

It depends what sort of food it is. Sometimes I will just snack on cold left over vegetables later in the day. I dont like to throw food away so will try to incorporate it into some other meal within the following 24hours. Unfortunately, some things do work their way to the back and get overlooked from time to time.

creativity really does wonders. well, mama will learn from you coz she does reheat it, did'nt see her making it into a different recipe or something. guess, it's time we check our ref for some ancient food in there. happy posting.

It is really a waste to cook food more than you can consume. For me I make sure the food I cook is consumed until the next day only.I don't have the habit of storing plenty of food in the refrigerator because the market is only four yards away from our house so we cook fresh meat, chicken, fish and vegetables too.
