Well seems I miss a lot of things when I go out to pick my fresh veggies from my gardens. I made a decent picking Sunday but today (Tuesday) was awesome. This photo is most of my pickings. Not pictured are 4 more ears of sweet corn as I left them in the sink forgetting about them. Anyhow I picked many tomatoes inclusing, grape, patio hybrid, babygirl, Beefsteak, and others. A few more green bell peppers, banana peppers, 4 zuchinni, a few more pickling cucumbers, and a few sprigs of brocholli as well. Man this was a great day of picking today. What type of pickings are you getting as of late? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yesterday I did up 7 quarts of tomatoes picked from the garden yesterday morning. Last week I did 10 quarts of salsa - tomatoes, onions, green peppers, jalipino peppers, and garlic all came from our/my garden. As you know today I did herbs but tomorrow will have more tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage to do. We've had corn on the cob fresh each day from the garden for a week but will be another week or so before I start freezing that.

32 - tomatoe plants but half are doing really poorly as their at the back where it doesn't get watered nearly as well. 18 Pepper plants - 3 different varieties, green bell, jalapeno, kung pao 6 kalrobi 6 brocoli 6 cauliflower (did horrid) 8 stalks of celery 4 egg plant 2 8 foot rows of bush beans 2 X 8 section of carrots 2 X 8 section of radishes (their all done and gone now) 2 X 8 section of leaf lettuce 24 heads of cabbage 12 hills of watermelon 12 hills of cantilope No idea how many pumpkin plants but have about 20 or so turning orange already Almost 100 foot fence of gourds (4 different kinds but mostly birdhouse gourds) Another 100 foot fence with peas, kentucky wonder beans, and cucumbers 50+ strawberry plants 4 X 8 section of asperagus 4 X 8 section of yellow onions 2 X 4 section of white onions 2 X 4 section of garlic 8 X 8 section of potatoes (didn't plant those, they came back from last year) Not sure on the corn but we got a 10# bag of peaches & cream seed and then 2 small packages of red corn I used to fill in an open spot after everything else was planted - I would say several hundred stalks but haven't counted... The garden is fenced on 3 sides and I planted marigolds along the open end which faces the house. I took pictures from the upper deck earlier in the year - I'll have to see if I can find them. Oh, the herbs are in a 4 X 8 raised bed but I may have to move or expand that next year.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Wow, that is really great! I am so envious of your bountiful harvest dear friend. I just harvested some eggplants yesterday but they are quite small, nothing to be really proud of but happy nonetheless for I still harvested something. haha.. Take care always..God Bless!

Hi GB! I am not sure what your climate is in your area but I did some research for you to see for I am really not an expert on gardening. haha.. "Eggplant is a cold-sensitive vegetable that requires a long warm season for best yields. The culture of eggplant is similar to that of bell pepper, with transplants being set in the garden after all danger of frost is past. Eggplants are slightly larger plants than peppers and are spaced slightly farther apart. Eggplant requires careful attention for a good harvest. Small-fruited, exotic-colored and ornamental varieties can be grown in containers and used for decorations." Here's the link if you want to read more: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/veggies/eggplant1.html I hope this will help you somehow. lovelots..faith210

wow grandpa bob! you sure have some wonderful pickings! Looks really yummy & healthy! Sad to say, I'm not much of a gardener, though my sister is! The most I do though is I harvest fruits from our trees, as of now, it's mango season for us, and just the other day was up the roof picking 'em small variety of mangoes...yummy! Are you also fond of mangoes? & and we also have jackfruits over here

They sure are lucky to be able to taste the fruits (& veggies!)of your labor! Hmm, as for jackfruit, I can't paste pics here yet, but here's a link to info and a photo of of it... http://www.theskinnycook.com/2007-04-30/jackfruit-picture.htm it really can be yummy...and as for mangoes, too bad it can't grow in your part of the world, hmm, have you ever tried dried mangoes? they're not the same as the fresh of course but still very yummy!

I gave the health aid that bathes dad a big bag of these. I also took a big bag to the wifes restaraunt as they serve a lot of this food. I love mangos. I wished I could grow them here in Minnesota. But they would die off with our cold and snowy winters. Never heard of jack fruits till now. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

my goodness GRANDPA BOB that looks so great and all that food is making me drool..LOL. I've actually started my own plantings...true to my promise to myself I decided to grow a "garden" but indoors...I mainly planted from seed parsley, dill, chives, basil, mint...also decided to plant marigolds....I'm figuring since I'm starting them all indoors I don't have to worry that it's late in the season....I would LOVE to plant tomatoes..I actually got seeds for some cherry tomatoes..but decided to do a check...did you know the leaves and stems of tomato plants are toxic to pets...Maybe I'll just keep the seeds aside, then plant next year and keep the plants on my fire escape..OR..what do you think...would it be too late to do that idea now??? Could use your tips....LOL

From what I know the leaves are dangerous only to felines. Bummer. Tomatoes need sunshine and heat to ripen is the best info I can offer. I don't think grow lights would ripen tomatoes. But in the fall I wrap green tomatoes in newspaper setting them in the dark cool basement. I bring them out after a few weeks setting them on the window sill and the sun ripens them in a day or two. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I knew that about tomatoes but some bright gardener told me that deer wouldn't bother tomatoe plants - they were wrong, the new twins this year ate the tops off my plants at the edge of the garden :( I sure hope they are ok, haven't seen the deer today :(

I used to garden *sigh* the house we live in has a yard the size of a postage stamp. So we used to garden with my Mother-In-Law. An average of 100 tomato plants of various kinds, potatoes, green beans, peas, cucumbers, onions, watermelon, cantaloupe, 1 year we did broccoli, 1 year we tried eggplant, etc etc. I found it very relaxing to work in the garden (and satisfying). She sold her house and moved, so no more gardening for us. I try to put out a couple of tomato plants in whiskey barrel planters, but just not the same..lol I do miss having all of that yummy stuff in my pantry. About the only thing we do now is freeze corn when it comes available.

I m still getting some peppers (habinero) and some tomatoes. I just started some zuchinni seeds and bean seeds and my baby plants are about 6 inches tall now. I planted other seeds too so waiting on them. The real harvest here in FL will be in the fall. I hope to get my raised beds in soon but that is waiting on finances. Can't wait till I have lovely pickings like yours.

Butterfly in my yard - A butterfly in my yard on my Lantana
I do not have much from the garden, my bell peppers are doing great. My egg plant are going good also. We are in the middle of a heat wave. It is going to be 104 tomorrow and the next several days. I am glad we have the pool. I have a flower called a Lantana which attracts butterflies. I have been trying to take a photo of one of the beautiful butterflies that we have coming around the lantana. According to a book I have here is a list of plants that attract butterflies and they are: butterfly bush, garden phlox, purple coneflower, cosmos, lantana, tithonia, and zinnias. I have two lantana bushes and some zennias which I planted before I know they would attract butterflies. I have been noticing I have a lot more butterflies than I ever have before in my yard. I have been sitting out on my patio with my camera so I can take photos of them. I also talk to them to help them calm down when I am outside. I do not know if it helps but I do it anyway. I ask them if I can take their pictures and what not. I tell them I will not hurt them. Sometimes they are really skittish and sometimes they do not mind the camera nor me around them. Do you plant flowers to attract birds or butterflies?

What a haul!! No pickings yet but soon--a couple of early girl tomatoes are turning from green to a little bit red and there are 13 tomatoes on that one lone plant! If I get all those tomatoes I'll count myself successful for this abbreviated gardening year.

I pick most my tomatoes when they are just starting to ripen. i wash them and then set them on a sunny window sill to redden. Keeps the critters and worms from eating them on the vine when they turn red. makes it a better harvest and all for us. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

The only vegetable I have in my garden is "Malunggay". I don't know if you are aware of this vegetable. But this is called miracle vegetable because it gives lots of health benefits and use for healing as well. So I always pick fresh malunggay leaves to include in my every day menu. I have also a Mango tree in front of my house and it bears fruits whole year round. It never tires from producing fruit and even our neighbors are very happy. You know why!

Oh AGB not only is that a great quantity but it all looks delicious and is making me very hungry! Fantastic only AGB can get my appetite back for me! All we really grew this year was potatoes but Niamh loves to help dig em up and loves eating the potatoes she has grown - I think next year we will really have to try and grow more even if it is in big pots! xxx
