Losing a pet - and deciding whether to get another

My mother in law recently lost a dog that she had for many years and loved very much. He died of old age. It was very hard on her and she has decided not to get another dog. How do you feel about this. Do you feel that its too painful or do you feel the joy they bring even in a short period of time -and the joy you bring into their short lives by providing a loving home makes it worth it?

You know in a way this is a pet peeve of mine...I can't stand it when I hear people say that after the loss of a pet that they'll never get another. Yes, it IS painful to lose a beloved fur-baby, but yikes I've been surrounded by pets all my life and could NEVER even dream of being without one or two..currently have two kitties. I mean after spending a good number of years with an animal companion how can anyone NOT want another "baby" Let us know if your mother in law does decide to get another pet...I'm just betting she does eventually.

I agree. Yes animals have short lives, we can fill them with love, an play, and affection. And our lives are richer for it. However its better then thosewho have had dozens of pets because they keep them outside and they get killed time and time again, but the owners don't really feel for them because their just owners not caretakers and the pets are just animals.

She's decided - just spoke with her - to hold a memorial for him soon. She has his ashes. I realize I have this topic twice....I went back a page when I was on the string word page and thought it would erase the last one...

I know that my dogs are going to die, oneday, so that is something I know, but am not prepared for. I will always have dogs, they bring me joy, and comfort. My fiances father refuses to ever own another animal, because he can't deal with the loss of them. It is hard to lose something so dear and close to you, but i don't think it should prevent you from loving another animal.

Its almost impossible to be prepared for such a thing and always dificult to lose someone so close to you I agree but as you say this shouldn't prevent us from loving another and being loved.
