I know a lot (if not most) of the posters here are American but is the build up to /mud slinging of the US election really the only important political event happening around the world?

Of course it's not but since we have our national political conventions coming up very soon and the presidential election in a few months, naturally these campaigns are going to be on the minds of many of mylotters...Americans or not.

I think for Americans, this election IS the most important political event because it offers a clear choice. How our country reacts to and participates in world politics will be determined by who takes office in January. Also, that "mudslinging election" we hold every four years is the way Americans participate in their democracy. It might not be pretty but it works for us.

I think the American Election is so popular because the world will see the tail end of that Bush creature. You are right though there really is so much more turmoil in the world. I think Russia invading Georgia is a pretty big event. We can't forget the tragic state of the Gaza strip. Then there is all the trouble in Iran and Iraq and Afghanistan. Not to mention how repressive life in North Korea is.
