There are signs that hip-hop is dying out, at long last!

You don't believe it? Well, check out the last two song titles that have hit #1: "Viva La Vida", by Coldplay, IMO the top song of 2008--"I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry (boo!).
David Archuetta (sp)--the American Idol--is looking at #1 with his new song, "Crush"--not a ballad in the classic sense of the term, but lyrically it reminds me of songs I listened to growing up.
I think it's quite possible that the average listener is tired of listening to tunes like "Get Low," "Shawty," "Touch My Body," and "In Da Club" and other such songs.
They are not faring so well anymore. Could this be a transitional year, like, say, 1979 was? I will never forget that "My Sharona hit #1 that September and stayed there -the first non-disco tune to hit #1 in awhile. Disco was pretty much over after that...AOR--what it gave way to--wasn't much better. In the early 80s--however, that craze gave way to a fresh new, post punk style...the reason I watched MTV every chance I got once I got to college.
My grad school years--the early 90s--songs came out that I just loved...and still do to this day. "Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead...now you are speaking my language..."Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega," and Lenny Kravitz's "It Ain't Over Til It's Over", just to name a few.
Trends come and trends go...
What about you? Are you glad to see hip hop go?

I'm not sure if this necessarily means that hip hop is on it's way out. Perhaps other styles are gaining popularity with the ever-changing taste of the listening public. Perhaps we're just seeing a transition in trends, but you never know. I'm more of a rock girl myself, so if it is the case, it wouldn't bother me at all.
