As someone who loves food, I often find myself eating even when I'm not hungry so I'm wondering, is there such thing as a "food addiction" and if there is what could you do about it?

Food and eating are very much addictions. You can find a wealth of information over the internet at different eating disorder sites. Help is available and I strongly encourage you to do some web searching on this one. Peace of mind and body can be had...

Hi granite_butterfly, thank you for responding and thanks for the advice, I think I will do some research on this. I wonder how many people are actually addicted to food?

Yes, there is. Studies show that eating excessively can lead to obesity. Try to control your eating habits specially if you start eating even if you are NOT hungry. In the long run, you might end up getting sick.

Thank you for responding jammy. It's strange, I don't eat all day until dinner and then I tend to pick at something for the remainder of the evening. Sometimes it is just because I crave the taste of something.

probably not. much like you smoke because it contains nicotine addiction, you are not addicted to smoking, you are addicted to nicotine. so unless you find that you keep eating the same kind of thing at certain time or frequency, then it's not addiction. it's just that you are bored, nothing to do and if you are busy or stressed out you won't have time to eat or even think about it. you already said you love food, so that's why you eat. that's what I think.

Hi LittleMel, thank you for your input. What you say makes sense, I never thought of it that way.

I think that it is possible for just about anything to become an addiction. I too find myself munching when I am not hungry. I am not sure that it would qualify as an addiction. Yet anyway. If it is all of the time that you are eating when you are not hungry then it would be called Complusive overeating. It usually manifests as a coping mechanism, but also extends to just eating out of boredom or because food is a "companion." If you really do think it is serious in some areas there are groups called over eaters anonymous that can help or go see a doctor.

Hi lilybug, thank your for your input. I do think a lot of my "food cravings" come from habit. I haven't gotten myself into the habit of eating something right before I go bed...I know, pretty dumb but I just can't seem to help myself...lol.

Over eating is already one of the many addictions out there. An addiction is where someone takes an abundance of something to the extreme. And to the point where they can no longer stop or have control over themselves. I think a lot of people over eat, but believe me you'll know when you have an addiction. And I'm sure that those around you will let you know.

I think I could stop but when I'm up late working, I just get the notion that I want to eat something, usually a bowl of cereal or left overs from dinner. I think you are correct in saying that people around me wouldn't say anything because I have put on some weight over the past year and no one in the family has said anything.

It is funny how the brain works. I had a friend of mine ask me if I eat excessively because of boredom. I had to ponder on that for a while and wonder if there would be some truth to that as well.
