To nap or not to nap - Sleep. To nap or not to nap... that is the dilemma, especially after a heavy lunch in the office!

I was reading another discussion by a fellow mylotter that got me thinking. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1664727.aspx In the article, she mentioned the following: "Avoid consuming large quantities of caffeine as well as foods that are heavy in fat and sugar, which meddle with a person's ability to fall asleep." So it got me thinking. Usually when we have a heavy meal, we have a high tendency to want to fall asleep. And when consuming high sugar foods, one tend to get a sugar rush that will keep you awake for the short period that the sugar is running through your blood, then you will feel tired and lethargic there after. I wonder how eating foods that are heavy in fats and sugar will meddle with the ability to sleep. In fact, it would make one more prone to sleep. No?

I don't know if I believe that. Last night I drank two energy drinks, hoping it would help me stay up later, but it didn't I went out like a light. I have problems staying asleep, I am constantly waking up in the middle of the night and I am usually up by 5 a.m.

I too have that problem. Drinking energy drinks are not much of a help to try and keep awake. Especially at night. Even drinking strong shots of expresso only work for a very limited short amount of time. That is why I was pretty intrigued when I read that posting on how sleep can be affected by eating some of the foods we eat.

Well, do check back with us here when you do. Better yet, provide the link to the article so that we could all read it as well. It would be an interesting read for sure.

I will have to check out the article. I went to bed last night at 10:30 and I woke up every hour on the hour until I finally rolled out of bed at 5:15. Today is my first day back to work for the school year, so no dozing in the afternoon when I get sleepy.

MOst ple will only have the tendency to fall asleep after a heavy meal, but that will only happen during the afternoon.. Reason, because of work load and waking up early in the morning, thus it makes our body system feel like shutting down for a while.. As for night time, we wun feel thta way, because our body has been adjusted and we all know that night time is the time for fun and play when we have no work to do.. Meals with heavy fats and sugar make us harder to fall asleep because of the glucose inside our body, making up a little more active, and the more sugar our body takes in, the more thirsty we feel and so it will affect our sleep in a way or other..

Really? As in due to the way our body is dehydrated from the digestion of those food, it will affect our sleep? This is something new to me. I guess I will have to do a little more research on this to find out more.

well we will feel lethargic after a heavy meal. but if we really lie on bed, we might not be able to fall asleep. the heavy meal is weighing on the stomach so it's kind of hard to fall asleep. i've not tried going to bed after a meal heavy in fat and sugar. i prefer to go to bed about two hours or more after my last meal of the day. cheers ;p

Hmm... I see. Most of the time, after a heavy meal, the sofa is the next spot. So dozing off there is pretty normal. I never really tried eating and going to bed immediately after. The amount of weight we could potentially put on if you do that is scaring me enough not to go to bed immediately. Hmm... maybe if I have a heavy meal tonight, I will just try to lie down on the bed to see if it is comfortable to sleep or not. Just to prove a point! 8P

Hi,ahgong.I usually don't want to move any more after I had a heavy meal,I know I should to do some exercise after that but I just have no energy to do that.So sometimes I think that maybe my stomach need more energy to digest the food so all the energy went to there to help it,and just a little left in my sport system.Maybe that is why we have a high tendency to want to fall asleep, because our body expend the least energy when we are asleep.

Precisely what I was thinking as well. That is why I find it interesting that the finding in the discussion mention that food that is fatty will affect one's sleep. I thought it will aid in the sleep. Not affect it.

Really? I wonder what is the reason eating oily food will do that? Cos I always feel sleepy after a heavy meal. And will sleep really quickly too! Especially if I am already relaxed after a nice hot shower and in my comfortable PJs. Any idea?
