Wheat Help!

August 22, 2008 6:46am CST
If there's any celiacs or people out there who've had to eliminate wheat from their diet, I'd really appreciate some advice! I have a lot of illnesses and I'm experimenting with the idea that a lot of it might be down to a wheat intolerance. Cutting it out is easier said than done though. I tend to eat almost exclusively bread and wheat based food products and I'm having a really hard time with the idea of stopping altogether, even though I think it'll make me so much better. The worst thing is having to stop pizza. Is there life after Dominos? I'd like some advice on alternatives, how to help yourself and stay strong and also what to look for and what to avoid. If there's anyone with their own story or any tips, I'd be hugely appreciative. Thanks!

I'm not sure if potato bread contains any wheat or not, but I don't think it does. I haven't had to cut wheat out entirely from my diet, but I've had to limit it. The one thing I've found that is a GREAT substitute is potato bread. They make hot dog and hamburger rolls, too. I even found a potato bread recipe on the net somewhere. (Do a search and you can find a bunch!) I know it's no substitute for Domino's (delivery) pizza, but you can make your own pizza dough with the potato bread recipe. There may even be a pizza dough recipe from potatoes. I hope it's not a 'starch' intolerance, because that would mean you'd have to cut out potatoes as well. But if you can eat potatoes, this is a great substitute for many bread products out there.

I've never heard of potato bread. Thank you so much, that sounds great! I'll look it up now. I don't think potatoes are a problem for me, but I have IBS and some severe health problems. I'd really like to get a food intolerance test, but I can't afford it at the moment.

I have IBS as well. That's one of the reasons I've had to limit my wheat intake. I get such severe pain whenever I eat a lot of wheat products, but the potato bread has made it very tolerable! The great thing is that it tastes just like regular bread!!! Even better, actually. It's very soft and takes longer to go stale or moldy. It costs a tiny bit more than regular bread, but not much and the benefits are SO worth it! I haven't made the potato bread myself yet, but it's on my 'ToDo' list. It's probably a lot cheaper than wheat bread to make, since the cost of flour has gone up so much. Good luck! I really hope this helps you. It's helped me a lot!

My partner's really enthusiastic about making potato bread. He loves to cook but is quite inexperienced. All the wheat free products I've seen so far are really overpriced, so perhaps making our own stuff would be better. Please let me know how your own baking efforts are going if you get a chance! Thanks again.

I had a time when I couldn't eat it back years ago. The worst for me was not having my pasta! I had so many allergies that I opted for the shots which I had for about 18 months then went to the daily pills. Since I have been using Nutra Feron I don't take anything and I have my pasta. As time went by my allergies changed. xooxoxoxo

Well I've bought some wheat-free pasta and I just hope it's ok! So far the wheat free pizza bases I bought were pretty awful. It's so disappointing and hard. I don't know how I'm going to do this! I didn't know there was any medication you could take to control food intolerances. Does that mean you take a pill or a shot of this stuff and you can eat whatever you want? I hope my allergies change. I really want to get some proper food intolerance testing done, but I can't afford it at the moment. xxxx

My husband has found a product called "gluten-Ease" at a local health food store, and it has almost saved our social life! He can take it before a party or dinner and he can eat anything again. The down side is that the pills are expensive, and he can only take them for special occasions.

My huisband has been wheat free for over three years, now, thanks to me re-learning how to cook. I have quite a few recipes posted on other sites that are gluten free and about gluten free living. If you are interested, go to my profile page, and I will try to get the sites listed there!
