What is the point in guns?

I am asking this question honestly and want honest answers. What point do guns serve in our society and why do you think we should have the right to own guns? And I'm talking besides hunting for food, military and law enforcement. I'm talking about the average Joe. Why should the average Joe have the right to own a gun? And I will go ahead and tell you right now that stating the US Constitution just isn't going to cut it as an answer for me. The US Constitution was written in 1787 and we have endured lots of cultural changes since then. And just like any law I think the US Constitution is one of those things that should be subject to revision due to cultural changes. I know that in my lifetime I will never see strict gun controls in the US. Guns are so rampant in the US right now I just don't see something like this happening. But it just sickens me everytime I hear about someone being shot just going about their everyday life but yet noone is doing anything to make guns less accessible and people keep throwing up that the US Constitution gives them the right to bear arms. I understand guns aren't the only weapon out there. But you would think if we could eliminate one thing it would help. Really, how many people have to die before we get better gun control in the US?

You gave the answer yourself, "The US constitution was written in 1787 and we have endured lots of cultural changes since then." Yes, cultural changes, but not necessarily for the good. Why remove the only way for self protection by the law-abiding citizen, when the bad guy has a never-ending supply to use on easy prey?

I like the way you think Arky69 which is why I just put in a request for your friendship. You are also close to my age which, on MyLot, is rare. This place is great but let's face it, there are a lot of youth here. Nothing wrong with youth, but who was it that said, "Youth is wasted on the young?"
