How to earn top ranking to get your site listed by search engines?

I used to blog regularly. I have submitted my blog to google, msn and yahoo for indexing, in order to get indexed. It may help some one to find my blog when they search. But I don't find my site in the searches. why? what should I do?

It is a very complex business web marketting. Have no doubt that they will find your site eventually.
On some of my sites they have been found almost instantly; the most popular ones usually.
Others can take around a month.
