They killed Colin the whale today

Colin, a baby whale was seen in Sydney waters trying to beach herself without her mother after a couple of days they decided they couldn't rescue her or it would just be too hard to care for her than to put her back in the wild so they decided it was better to "put her down" humanely. Some groups tried to take an injunction out against this but they moved too fast and put her down before the injunction was served. I think this is so sad. How do u feel about this. When we find human babies without their mothers we don't put them down, no matter how humanely a method we may chose.

It is so sad, there are many things on youtube about it now - reports from current affairs shows through to people singing odes to Colin. If you are feeling strong you might like to look at some of them. Just go to youtube.com and search for Colin the Whale. There is one titled "Colin (Collette) the Baby Whale lost its mum in Pittwater - Sydney" set to lovely music and showing footage of Colette swimming around looking for her mother but returning to snuggle up to a sailing vessel who she adopted as her mother. Thanks for your comments disneywolf.

Thanks for sharing, I know I was so sad this morning when I found out at work, I thought they were going to think more about what they could do for her first. If she was starving it seems strange that she had so much spirit left to thrash around so much. Would it be considered humane if they did that to a human baby?

I read the article of what they had to do to the little whale and I think that was really sad. There was nothing else that they could do to help I guess. It's sad that they had to put it to sleep. Without it's mother there was nothing that they could do. I don't like what they did and why the did it. But who are we to say what they can and can not do. If the baby didn't have any other way to survive what were they going to do?

Thanks twallace for your comments. I think some people thought they did the right thing and others thought they hadn't tried everything that could have been tried yet.

This is one time that I think they really didn't know what to do. How would you nurse a baby whale that thinks a boat is it's mom. They have done great with other sea animals but I guess that a hump back whale was out of there league. Have a good one.

I think it sounds a bit wrong to say the "killed" it. It was put to sleep because they could not save it. Would you have prefered it to stay in the water and suffer?

I did but I just thought that was how the whale recated to the injecetion. An injuction may have actually caused it more misery in the long run.

Thanks for your comments Donna. Did you read the story about how the whale was put to sleep. If someone did that to a human, wouldn't that be considered killing? I am sure everybody had the whale's interest at heart, but it seems like they rushed the lethal injection it a bit when someone was trying to serve an injunction but they didn't get time before they put her to sleep.

This is a sad story, and it happen around us everyday. I think that we should try to understand why they took that decision. they are expert in their job and they know better than us about this. So I disagree if we blame them and we don't know what they maybe know. Every body have their own opinions and this make us unique.

thanks Nizhama - it is good to look at it from both sides - you are a very thoughtful person, but people look at this differently.
