My husband brought back a box of red plums! They're a little dull tasting, but they're ok. My Mom had a bunch of purple plum recipes, but they seemed to have more taste. Should I use the same recipes or different ones for canning?
Another guy has zuchini to give away. I can't wait. This should be a fun fall with all the give aways because people's gardens produced too much.
So what are you cooking with your garden produce or the extra of friends/neighbors?

Half are mushy (over-ripe).
Half are hard (might be underripe).
All the ones of each I tried tasted like nothing except the really hard were sour. I mixed them after depitting them. I then added some sugar. They finally have some taste.

Actually, they came out pretty good. More like a wild red jelly than a jam, but tastey just the same. Have two more discussions about them if you'd like to check. Take care

I would try it using the same recipes for canning, but I would probably do a small trial run to test it first.
Garden abundance is great. It is great to be able to share in the bounty of the harvest, and it reinforces community connections.

Yes, many of these people I've given baked goods to in the past and now they're providing me with food.
A small test batch sounds like a good idea. Thanks and take care

I know absolutely nothing about canning. I do love to eat purple plums. None of our neighbors have gardens this year and I have never had a green thumb. I can't grow anything as I have tried more than once. Enjoy your freebies from relatives and neighbors.

This is our first year of produce freebies, so I really would like to make the most of them. Thanks and take care

I`d use the same recipes for canning. To brighten the flavor a bit, you might try a dash of lemon juice, or make them into spiced pie filling . . . add ginger and nutmeg to create a stronger tasting mix.
I`m making zucchini brownies to freeze. Mmm, so good and moist. You can also just freeze sliced fruit and veggies (blanched) in ziploc bags and that works well. I do it for stirfry.

These plums are really soft, I'm afraid if I tried to freeze them, they would turn to mush when I cut them.
Lemon juice is wonderful for helping out a jam or jelly recipe, isn't it? Also pie filling and apple butter/sauce.
Not sure about ginger and nutmeg with plums.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Trying to find my Mom's recipe. The best plum one had nuts in it. Even people who hated plums and plum preserves loved it. Take care

Gosh, writersedge, all your produce sounds so delicious! We buy all of our produce. I love cooking different kinds of squash, corn, and preparing alot of different salads with tomatoes, my favorite! I love zucchini but just haven't bought it much lately. I can't wait until an organic farmers' market opens up not too far from here over the next couple of months. I will be the first one there!
Enjoy all your produce. Sorry I can't help with the plum thing as I've never tasted or cooked a plum.

You've never tasted a plum?
Don't they have them in stores down there?
How are you doing?
How is the storm doing?
Did you evacuate?
In a couple of months all our markets will be closed and frost will be coming.
First year we were given anything. Thanks and take care (stay safe)

I would love to grow food year round. They're trying to find ways to do that indoors up here. Right now, three seasons is the best they can make a green house go for, but they're trying new technology all the time. Can you imagine living in NY State, on the Canadian border and being able to grow in all four seasons? Three is hard enough to believe.
Glad you're just getting rain that you need anyway. Hope it stays that way, take care.

I don't believe I've ever tasted a plum. Yes, they do have them in our grocery stores. It's one of those foods my mom didn't introduce us to and I just have never tried one. Maybe I ought to.
I am doing good in terms of the storm. We got lots of rain and some gusty winds, but that is all. It has been raining everyday quite a bit, since last Mon. (today is Sat.). We were actually behind on rain by several inches, so I'm hoping our water table is now starting to catch up to what it should be. I believe Tropical Storm Fay is about to enter Alabama and Mississipi after leaving the northern western panhandle of FL.
No, we did not evacuate and probably wouldn't unless a Category 3 hurricane or higher was heading this way. We have good hurricane shutters and a garage door tie-down. But if there was talk of getting a huge storm surge (water from the ocean) coming way inland (we live 1 1/2 miles from the Peace River which feeds into the gulf), we would definitely leave.
People down here grow produce year round, can you believe that? I can't either. Once in awhile during the winter, it might drop below freezing which means people have to cover their plants that night.
I'm so glad you did have people give you some fresh produce this year. That's wonderful. Take care, writersedge.
