I believe we learned about this in class once, and I no longer have this book to reference to it, but I am quite sure that it is left over from the womb. I think that nipples develop before the gender itself develops, like the organs. I think that in the womb, all bodies start to develop as if they were female, later taking on the characteristics of the opposite gender. I could be wrong, but this is the best answer that I can give you.
Also, if you are looking for a funny read, the book, "Why Do Men Have Nipples" is a funny and informative read, and so is its sequel. It's written by a writer and a doctor, and it answers that question and more. I hope you decide to check it out.

Hmmmm, well men can't nurse newborns. Who knows, maybe in the future men will be able to, remember that guy who was pregnant and gave birth..

It is an interesting question. I think that it is the way both men and women are. If you do not have nipples, you will considered to be special. lol

Hi alecz! Everything that God created has a purpose. I think me have nipples for aesthetic reasons. I just can't imagine men who have no nipples at all. It's not good to see my chest without these nipples. Another thing is that, there are several nerve endings around your nipples, so pretty much sensitive to touch. LOL!
