I envy people with good dirt

Every where I have lived, as an adult, I have had bad dirt. I have had to buy and haul in bag after bag after bag of soil. I have had truckloads of topsoil delivered. Here where we are right now I have raised flower beds with "imported" soil. My veggie gardens will be in raised gardens with a mix of peat moss, manure, and soil. I envy those who can just go and dig up a patch and sow directly into the ground. The only time I was able to do this is when we lived on the farm when I was younger (3rd grade to 8th grade). Dad tilled it we raked it and then sowed directly in it and dad had tilled in some manure before we started planting. Oh to have good dirt.

Oh I know what you mean - the last house I lived in had the 'dream soil' it was an old old farmhouse and you could dig the soil with your hands year round and everything grew like crazy. Where I live now was once a hay field but the soil is not good. Rock, clay, sand, muck it changes from one foot to another. I am constantly working on the soil including hauling chicken and rabbit droppings, mulching, and hauling marsh muck to till in. I can't tell you how many wheelbarrels of 'stuff' I've hauled to the garden area already and have piles of stuff waiting for end of season when I'll be adding as much as I can for next year.

Here in FL we don't have dirt we have sand lots and lots of sand. In AR we had rocks lots and lots of rocks you dig a little theres rocks dig some more more rocks. We had fabulous rock gardens. Here is Fl there are no rocks. FL has no indeginous (sp) rocks at all. The "rocks" you see here are composed of seashells and sea critters not true rocks or imported rocks that cost a fortune for a small rock I could dig a hundred out of the ground back in AR. Here we have major fireant problems too. Which is why I have raised beds.

Oh we have tons of rocks here - you will never get all the rocks cleared out of an area because they are always coming up. I use a lot of them for landscaping, particularly the larger ones. Here in Michigan years back it was common practice to build houses out of the Michigan rock/stone - they are beautiful homes and the materials were cheap (free) and on hand - clear a field build a house, barn, or fence :)

I know what you mean. My grandparents and my parents and a few assorted uncles and aunts rocked thier house one summer it was gorgeous! I love a rocked house. It brings back such good memories. My grandparents have since passed away but I will always have those memories.
