When do you decide it's time to say "good bye?"

I have never had a guinea pig that grow into old age. Mine is almost 5 years old and is suffering from either an urinary tract infection or kidney stones. He suffers greatly whenever his poops or pees. It's awful to hear him suffer but I have been told not to put him down yet. I am giving him unsweetened cranberry juice and a bottle of herbal Stone Breaker. I am trying to help as best as I can but wonder when enough is enough. Does anyone have any advice?

I'd definitely take him to the vet. I had a guinea pig that constantly got stones and we put him on a special diet. Even then, he still got them (apparently some have a genetic predisposition for them) and had three or four removed, surgically, over his lifetime. A vet specializing in rodents and exotics should be able to give you a better solution to his stones or give you options, as far as treatment goes. Hope your poor little guy is feeling better soon!
