Private Babysitting - Tips and Info needed!

I've been a stay at home mom since my daughter's birth nearly 6 years ago. Lately I've been itching to contribute to the household in a monetary way, since we are a paycheck-to-paycheck family. A convential job wouldn't work, since my husband's hours are so erratic - there's no way for me to plan around him. So I turned to the age-old solution for stay at home moms: babysitting. I do not want to run a daycare by any means. One or two children extra at a time! I do want to get certified, but that will come later - I have two families (different schedules) ready to hire me. Is there anything I can do, since I will be working "freelance", essentially, to protect myself legally? Has anyone else done this? What were your experiences? Do you have any tips/suggestions for me? Thanks!

My sister look after children. One of the things that you need to do (even if the people are friends of yours) is have a small contract with them. Included in the contract is the hours that they want you to work and the money that you want to be paid. If they say they want you for 30 hours a week then they are responsible to pay you for those hours even if a grandparent happens to come for a visit and look after the kids for a day. That is how you make a living and if not for their children you would have other children. Make sure that you have things like booster seats for the table, gates for the stairways and potty seats for the bathroom. My sister loves it. There will always be people who want to take advantage of your time, but a contract will help keep it to a minimum. Make sure they know what you will charge if they are late picking up their children. P.S. Serve healthy snacks. This makes parents happy. They are more expensive than junk food, but you can claim it on your income tax anyway.

Oh, that's another thing - because I live on a military installation, I cannot watch children in my house without following a lot of REALLY extreme rules and completely transforming my home. I will be watching the kids in their own home.

If you are watching the kids in their home, what are you afraid you will need to be legally guarded from? The contract is a great idea. Have everything written out and make the parents sign it and you sign it also.

I have been doing daycare in my house for the last 16 yrs. I know that you can get insurance from your homeowners in case anything happens while the children are at your home, but it will raise your premium a ton. Once a little girl broke her leg on our trampoline. She was 2 and just landed funny when she was bouncing. We turned it into our insurance and they paid the parents $3000 to help with the medical bills. They also told us that if anyone else gets hurt on the trampoline, they won't cover it, so we had to get rid of it. It is a great way to make some extra income! I love that it gave my kids someone to play with while they were growing up too. I still do it because the money is great and I can get things done around the house while the kids are napping.
