... a particular pattern that uses up scrap yarn. I remember some years ago coming across a simple pattern that used one main color (usually black) and whatever other scraps you had. I know it used the black as the base, and then worked in each little bit of the other color until that ran out, and then you just used another color but kept the black as the base which tied it all together. I don't remember it being worked as two strands throughout because it would be very thick, but I don't know how else it could be done. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd love to be able to use up all my little pieces that aren't big enough for anything else. (And no, I'm not interested in other things that use small bits, no grannies, etc.)

I don't know anything about knitting or crocheting but I found this: http://www.knitlist.com/99gift/scrap-afghan.htm I bought some needles and yarn last November, thinking I'd learn to knit and they've been in the closet ever since! I plan to learn soon, hope I can find info for free on the net!

Do you know how to do a hounds tooth stitch? You could do two rows of the color in hounds tooth and then 5 or 6 or so rows in double or single in the black. Carry the thread you're not using up the edge of the afghan and catch it in the end stitch of each row. Unfortunately I don't have a pattern for hounds tooth stitch.

What I'm looking for is not really a pattern, it can be done with any stitch, it's just how you work the colors in. You don't even have to have enough of the other color to finish a row, so it's great for using up all sorts of small amounts of yarn that are no good for anything else.

I don't know any pattern. I sometimes make scarfs with black being the main color and the left over yarns I would crochet on the side edges or on the top and bottom of scarf. If I come across any pattern, I will be happy to send it to you.

Is this an afghan pattern you're looking for? And crochet or knit?

Crochet, and it doesn't really matter what the actual pattern is, it's a way of weaving the various colors together with the base color (usually black).

I looked for something similar to what you are describing. Couldn't find any thing. But these looked cute. So I thought I'd forward it on: http://www.spunkyhats.com/pattern_razorsedgesock.htm

Hi! :) I don't know of this is the type of pattern you were looking for, but I was looking up scrapghans for myself as well, and came across this one, and remembered seeing that you posted for a pattern. http://patternsbydot.blogspot.com/2006/01/scrumptious-scraps-afghan.html It isn't a granny square pattern, and it gives a way to join the yarn without lots of knots. It also uses black as the backdrop color. I don't know if it's the right kind of pattern, but every little bit helps when you're searching :) Happy crocheting!

That's not the one I was looking for but it sure is beautiful! And pretty easy, too. I'm definitely going to save this one - thank you so much!

hmmm... that sounds pretty interesting... I have a pattern that I've used for my scraps before, although it's not a "scrap" pattern. It's a diagonal pattern and I just kept changing the colors every couple rows for whatever colors you had to use up. It turned out pretty good, and I made the border for it in black. I'd show ya a picture, but my mom kinda took it over years ago so I don't have it handy...

Hi ldyjarhead, long time eh? I used to knit a crochet patterns by Kaffe Fassett and he has a fantastic technique for working in a new colour when needed, some of his patterns consist of dozens of colours (difficult to do) but the techniques for working these in are very simple. If I understood you right, I think you might find your answer on one of the many websites dedicated to, or about him.
