I would say under $1000. I am an amateur photographer and would like to acquire a DSLR, such as Canon EOS 450D for example, any suggestions?

I would suggest either a Nikon or a Canon. Those are definitely the best brands for DSLRs! If you're looking for cameras under $1000, you'll definitely want to go with an entry-level DSLR. I shoot with Nikon myself, so I'm more familiar with the Nikon models than the Canon ones. So with Nikon, I would recommend the D80. It's around $800. Or if you really want, you can wait and get the new D90! It will cost around $1,000. And unlike any other DSLR, it shoots video! Also, the Nikon D200 which is a more professional model sells for around $1,000 new right now. But you might be able to find them used for cheaper! This is a great choice if you want something more higher-end than an entry level camera, but don't want to spend over $1,000. If you're looking for something cheaper, you can get a new D60 for around $700, a new D40x for around $600, or a new D40 for around $500. However, the only downside to the D40, D40X and D60 is that they don't have an autofocus sensor, so not all lenses work with these cameras! And of course, you can always buy used! The D70 and D50 go for around $300-$400. And you can get used D40s, D40xs, D60s and D80s too! If you do want to buy used, you can check eBay, Craigslist or the used sections on sites like Adorama.com and BHPhotoVideo.com. Then you have to decide if you want to buy the camera with a lens or not. I personally always buy body only (no lens), but that's just because I really don't have any use for an 18-55mm kit lens. But if you think you'd use the lens a lot, then buying the camera that comes with a lens is probably a good idea!
