I believe people who start smoking want to smoke and then there is peer pressure.

I've been a smoker for a while now...When I first started, I'm not even really why I did...Everybody around me did, and I kind of just picked up the habit I guess...I eventually quit, only to start up again a few years later...That time around, I was just getting really stressed out about something and just decided to have one smoke...After that, I had just a couple puffs from friends smokes on the weekend...The following Monday, I went to the store and bought a pack...

I can never understand why people start. it smells awful, everyone says the first time they try it it feels horrible, so why do they ever try the second time. and it's SO expensive! there are so many better things to spend money on, which give you much more enjoyment. I really really can't understand why anyone would have any desire to smoke.

I think there are two good reasons that people start smoking... 1) Peer pressure 2) There mums and dads smoke

Yes of course that's really precise and direct. Mostly teenagers like us ^_^ are often influence by friends and mostly its a sign of ego, aggressiveness, feeling suave, or for the girls to see him sleek or something. This is mostly the misconception of a lot of teenagers worldwide and I pity those I see on streets here in our country Philippines which most of the young ones and others are in elementary years knows how to smoke. That a bit alarming for someone who smoke in that age and we all know the risk and consequences of that. Do our government must be alarm? And yes we all know that family is a big factor that influence our young ones not only they are the models but they will have this mental framework that smoking is a natural habit and hey not including the years they inhales second hand smoke? Hope this topic maybe a eye opening to those who really cares to our children and our love one Thanks for your comment and I hope your not smoking ^_^

having parents that smoke usually puts people off smoking. I grew up finding it utterly disgusting.

No one could help you stop it, and yes sir, no one except YOU and YOU alone...I'm maybe a pro-health advocate and even me I can't stop you quitting that. But here are the steps I suggest you can do: First to admit yourself that your addicted to it and Learn more about the consequences of doing that and just Think of others especially your love ones who receive passive smoke that kills Lastly sing the latest song "No Air" just kidding... Hope my discussion helps you and try to read the comment above and be inspired and Hope this will serve an eye opener for other... Thanks and Happy posting!!!

I started smoking in high school, and like most everyone eles-- all my friends were doing it, and I wanted to be like them.

But have you actually thought of doing so would not be beneficial or good to your health and for the health of others? sometimes they say "its my own body and I do whatever I want to my body" yes its true but how about us or how about the one that are affected by the smoke that smoker fuses to us. I really don't want to argue about the issue, I'm really a nursing student and I'm would like to emphasize the effects and not to be judgmental of you being a smoker. I would just like you to think of the fact that it's better to live a healthy normal life and not suffer in the long run. Thanks for your post and hope you try to see things in a broader perspective.

1) They want to fit in 2) Someone in their family does it 3) Depression 4) They need a fix I do not like smoking. I am allergic to smoking. Smoking is very unhealthy and it makes people ill.

i started smoking when i was in college. 3rd year college to be exact. well, it's because my friends are doing it and i think i can do it too. but i am really not a chain smoker. i am not addicted to smoking. i can go on for 3 days or for one week without smoking. i smoke usually 1 or 2 sticks a day, just to release stress and to have time talking and chatting with my smoking buddies. but i am thinking of quitting when i get preganant or when i will be starting with my own family. i dont think it's a hard thing to do. quitting. well not for my case.

I started to smoke when I was about 16 I think. I started smoking because my friends were doing it. Back then there were not all these warnings about what it could do to you and your lungs. I am not smoke free, I quit cold turkey 20 months ago and I just wish I had done it sooner. It was weird, I didn't even like to smoke, I was just addicted to it and I also did it out of habit.

Gnarly photo! But its the truth that hurts. I can remember my grandpa telling me that in WWII they would put cigs in the ration pack of G.I.'s, it was supposed to give them something to do while they waited for the enemy to make a move. Now it seems that its passed from generation to generation. I don't smoke, I did once and I got caught and had to smoke the whole pack, that's all I needed, plus I think its a nasty habit.

I don't smoke myself but have an interesting story about people starting. I have a friend who literally started when he was younger as he thought it was a big joke that he 'looked cool' ie he knew it was stupid and no clever and it was part of his strange humour that lead him to try smoking and then keep it up, its madness really isnt it. Of course now he is 22 and regrets having started since he became addicted.

I don't smoke but I was tempt cause all my friends do that. They say that it's a stress reliever.I dunno but they say you'll be cool of you smoke. Yes they know what it will cause on them, but still they can't resist just like an addiction.

I tend to start smoking when I get rather drunk, and then quit when I wake up the next morning

I started smoking when I was 12 because all my friends were doing it. Little did I know back then that it is so addicting. I have since tried the patch, hypnotism, all the meds, gum,it's frustrating not to have the willpower to be able to quit by myself. There is no miracle cure to stop smoking. I wish there was. I think it is gross and disgusting. Anyone have any ideas that I haven't mentioned to help me quit?
