I want my own dog!

Hi guys. I have a little problem. Right now my family owns 2 dogs and 3 cats. Only one of those animals (a cat) is MY pet. And I think I have proven myself in being able to take care of an animal with her...now I would really like to get my own dog. I was looking them up at Petfinders and I found this old spaniel I really like. He's 10, which is good for me because he's alread matured, and I would really rather adopt an older dog because they need it more, cute puppies will always find a home, and they are less likely to be put down.
Isn't he sweet?

My problem is I don't think my dad will let me adopt my own dog--even though I have proven myself a responsible pet owner (vet fees, proper care, grooming, etc.) I know that if my dad agreed my mom would let me...but my dad can be like a brick wall when it comes to bringing another animal in the house. I don't know how I could persuade him! :(

Money, will you have enough money to keep that dog going?
Have you met the dog? Would your Dad fall in love with it if he met it?
Since you already have 5 animals at your house, this will be a hard sell. I wish you luck.

Yes, I would be able to take care of the dog financally. Plus I work at PetSmart so I can get stuff for the animals cheap :P lol.
I have not met the dog...but it's ugly lol. So I figure it I don't want it, no one else will.
We;ve had as many as 14 animals at once! (4 dogs, 7 cats, 2 birds and a fish). So I don't see why my dad is against me getting my own dog, that would only make 6; less than half of what we used to have.

lol! I thought about that :P I told myself if I adopted the dog and spent my own money to get it he has no right to get rid of it...but he can very well through me out on the street! lol. I don't know if he actually would but I can say...I would feel some sort of wrath! x.x

Ever consider that perhaps your family thinks there are enough animals there already? That's a lot of animals that need to be fed, groomed, vetted, exercised, played with and cleaned up after. That's a lot of time and a lot of money for their on going care and feeding.
Maybe your Dad has a point. Maybe you should wait till you get your own place where you can have your own pets. Mum and Dad's house....Mum and Dad's rules....
I have no doubt that you can sensibly care for an animal. Perhaps you should just help care for the ones that are there rather than add another one...at least for now. Animals are a HUGE responsibility...I reckon you have enough there already.

Well that would be a reasonable arguement if my dad had to do all those things...but really my moms takes care of most of our current animals needs. And I help too....I drive them to vet appointments, grooming appointments, and since I work at PetSmart I get my mom discounts on everything too (including grooming). I help exercise them too (when it's cool enough, not when its 100+ out lol).
But the thing is I know my mom would be all for me getting my own dog. It's just my dad that has a problem with it, and remember he doesn't deal with animals that much. Plus neither my mom nor my dad have to deal with my cat...I pay her expenses and take care of her...it would be the same with my own dog. So it really wouldn't be any extra work or money for them.

Tell your dad if you dont adopt this dog probably no one else will. Let him know you have been vrey responsible with the cat and that you will take excellent care of the dog that he will never be a problem, and that the animal deserves a loving home. Tell him your heart is set on this and since obviously he likes animals too, it would be the best thing for the dog. Take him to see the dog and let him fall in love with him too.

I am defeniatly worried that no one else will adopt him, because he is 10 years old! And most people don't want to get dogs much older than one or two. And I've already brought up the fact that I've taken good care of my cat, but I haven't directly and "seriously" asked him to let me get a dog--I have joked.
But what I'm worried about, is sometimes if you bring something up to my dad that he has a strong feeling for, or you've brought it up before--he'll get mad or obviosuly irritated.

i have seen the photo and i like the name of the dog. buster. unique and superhero looking. i hope your father approves that you adopt that pet because very seldom people like you would have an interest to adopt especially adult dogs.
for me, ask him nonstop about you adopting the pet. tell him how much you like the dog and that you'll be responsible enough to take good care of him. just show him how interested you are with this dog. for sure he'll get tired of hearing you about the adoption thingy and give up. haha. he would end up saying yes.
teehee!
happy posting and happy mylotting!

lol I like your idea, and I wish that it would work out that way. But honestly...when I keep bugging my dad about something, and asking him the same question over and over he starts to get annoied and mad x.x That can never end good lol.
But I defeniatly know what you're saying about people not wanting older dogs. Everyone always wants puppies because they think they are so small and cute. And it's sad that some people don't realize the extra work and patience you have to put into a puppy. Well, I do realize it--and that's why i would prefer to get an older dog. Honestly, I'm not sure I could deal with all the "terrible twos" in puppy stages lol. I want a dog that already knows how to behaive, and one I can just love and spoil! :)
Thank you Skbh12

I don't know. Old dogs are a lot of responsibility. Already 10 yrs old?? Thats like adopting a grandma instead of a baby. You have parts wearing out and lots of doctor visits. A cat is one thing... but a dog is a much bigger responsibility. It sounds like he has his hands full with the other pets too. How about a fish or a hamster or something small??

I defeniatly know a dog is more responsibility tahn a cat--but i think I have earned the right to take that step up. Not take a step down towards a hamster or a fish! x.x too easy. And I do have a fish already :P
But my dad doesn't really have his hands full with the other animals, my mom does the most with them. But regardless, they never have to deal with my cat-and it would be the same if I got my own dog. My responibility, not theirs.

Well I can see his standpoint in all this, at least I believe. It has nothing to do with how responsible you are with your pet, I know that he sees it. But you already have two dogs and three cats in the house, its a virtual zoo!!! Maybe your dad has had enough with the animals, but has too big of a heart to put any of the current ones out. But he's putting his foot down on a new addition because there are enough animals already.

Compared to how our house usually is, this is not a zoo! hehe. But we have referred to our house as one before...when we owned 4 dogs and 7 cats at once. Our house just seems so empty with animals...we're used to having a lot of animals. My mom even admitted that she would like to have a couple more dogs, she misses it too!
