Which sweetener is better??

Hi!! My family has a history of diabetes. Almost everybody on my fathers side of the family is diabetic, and even from my husband family there have been some cases, so I try to watch what i eat and keep my son healthy specially since both me and my husband have family members that are diabetic. I almost never let him have sweats or chocolates or stuff like that. I usually give him sugarfree stuff (ice cream,candy,cake), and sometimes I even bake using splenda. I was told that splenda was the safest sweetener,so I use it regularly but i recently heard that even splenda was associated to cancer. And well with all the information now about aspartame i´m afraid to use any kind of articial sweetener .So now whats worse, using regular sugar leads to diabetes and being overweight, or an artificial sweetener that can cause cancer???
