how can i have an eco friendly house?

I´ve been interested in making some changes around my house since i´m trying to be more aware of the problems our environment is having. I think all of us should pitch in and do our part in saving our planet,since it´s our responsability and for our children. For a while now i´ve been doing the recycling thing with the garbage but i´d like to do more. Can you help me out giving me some suggestions.......... Recently people have told me about switching my regular light bulbs for those that save energy,and even save a lot of money!!! I´m particularly interested in batteries. I use rechargeable ones now but still have a lot of the old ones and I don´t know whether i should throw them out,or what to do with them,,,any suggestions? I want to create a culture of awaremess in my kids too and make it a habit instead of a chore! And I just know there must be so many more things we can do at home that can help, so please give me some ideas,,,what do you do at home or school? Thanks for your info.
