Candidates that don't make it to election time

I had heard that there have been death threats made against Barack Obama and it makes me wonder. If, while campaigning for President, Obama were killed, who would then become the Democratic candidate? Would it be Biden, his V.P. running mate or would the Democratic Party have to choose one? And, since this is a place with people from around the world, let me expand the question. If someone were running to be the President of your country and was killed, what would happen? Would the party pick someone else to run or go with that person's running mate? I know the topic may seem morbid, but the thought just crossed my mind and I have to admit I do not know the answer

I don't know for sure but I don't think that the VP succession applies to an unelected presidential candidate. I think the DNC would hold an emergency meeting and Hillary would be chosen to run in his place.

That's prety much what I was thinking, although not so much about Hilary, but that the Party would make some sort of choice in that emergency. I hope we never have to truly find out the answer, as killing a candidate really stinks. I still remember the horror of watching Robert Kennedy get shot

I remember that, too. During the tribute to Teddy Kennedy there were quite a few pictures of him and Jack that made me so sad. The world will never know the things that he could have accomplished.

I don't think that the VP would become the candidate. I think though that Hillary Clinton, it would be passed down to her as the running candidate and then she would have to choose a running mate. The VP would only move up to position if Obama became president, but then was killed, then he would take over his spot. Not during the election on figuring out who would be president.

Yes, I know that the VP would move up after they were in office. It's a morbid thought, but I was very curious about it. I don't think it has ever happened in American history. Yeah, I guess Hilary would then get the chance to run since she came in second to Obama

I think it would probably pass to Hillary. (Unless Howard Dean could prevent it.) I pray that that nothing like this does happen and I'm glad Hillary didn't get the VP nomination. Even though I wanted her to be president, it can't come that way. It would be Vince Foster all over again. No matter what the evidence, if anything were to happen to Obama, Hillary would be accused of murder.

Yes, that was the Foster person they were talking about. I don't know why he wants the job so bad either

That is an interesting question! I would suppose the VP candidate would become the new candidate, but who knows?

I really like Obama - his speech last night was awsome. My greatest fear for him is that someone will take a shot at him. When the fireworks went off after his speech at the convention I nearly jumped out of my pants! I really thought someone had taken a shot at him. I really hope nothing happens & I'm not sure what the party would do if it did. I think he will be a great President - I only hope that the American people will wake up & realize his potential. We need a change!

I agree that we need a change. I am not totally convinced that Obama is the one to do it though
