Time to Move On

As summer is winding down, are you happy or sad that your gardening adventures are winding down too? I just had a few things in containers and alongside the house, so I didn't really have a 'proper' garden, but it kept me occupied and I definitely got a sense of satisfaction from what little I was able to do. I've still got tomatoes and banana peppers galore coming in with no evidence of stopping anytime soon, some of them are even still flowering, so I have no idea when they will stop producing. The three cucumber plants have come to their demise, the few fruit that are appearing now are shaped like gourds and the plants are dying back. I did plant one more seed about 4 weeks ago and it is growing nicely and is already flowering, so I'm hopeful that I'll get a few fruit from that before it gets too cold. I tossed a few more lettuce seed in a pot two days ago and I'm sure that will do fine since lettuce doesn't mind a cooler temperature. I'm feeling a bit melancholy this morning, knowing it won't be long and the colder temperatures will be upon us, and my mini garden will be nothing but a memory, but I'm prayerful that I'll be in my own home soon and look forward to a 'real' garden next year. Is your gardening season over? Are you sad, or are you already planning how to do things better next year?

Yikes, now that it's winding down I have more work than ever! I got get alot of my plants inside or somewhere decent to sleep for the winter! (Alot of my plants are tropical and we're moving soon, so the non-tropical plants can't stay in the ground) ^_^' my family kinda grows all year 'round. If I can turn it into a business, this fact will never make me sad or even frustrated.

You're in Ohio too and grow year round? What are you hoping to grow for a business? That sounds interesting.

Windows that let in sunlight are awesome things. Well, most of the things I hope to sell, I don't have yet. Right now I have several young trees that I'm taking care of. Maples and a mimosa flamoyante. I also have roses that I'm looking after. And my Mom and I have strawberries and tomato plants. What I'd really like to have is salmon berries, a few citrus trees maybe, and bamboo. (I'll add more things as I go). I'd like to sell fresh produce, as well as make the berries and fruits into jams, pies, etc. And the trees, I'm hoping to sell as soon as they're old enough or bonsai'd. (Except my Mimosa, I'm waiting for it to flower and have babies so I have smaller mimosa's to sell). The bamboo, since it grows like crazy and I'd have to keep it in doors most of the year long I'd have to cut alot of it and I was hoping to make the bamboo into things -- maybe tent-frames, use them in the garden, etc. And the shoots I could sell since they're edible as well. My roses, I could use in art to sell, as well as maybe cheaper holiday flowers. And hopefully by that point I can sell my head-ache tea blend (which I make from collecting wild ground ivy and clover). There's alot of things I'd really like to do. Because with the plants I'll have more than I can use to feed my family...and since I'm getting to the point where I'll need money for my future, it seems to make sense to connect the two together. I'm not sure how I'd go about setting up shop yet, but it depends on how things go next year. ^_^'

I hope to put in a really good garden next year and do it all right this time, so I am sort of looking forward to starting all over. Even my flowers did not do as well as usual this year, except for the colius plants which are awesome. Fresh veggies from the garden are so much better than store-bought ones. Hope we are done with the wacky weather next year.

Yes, that's true, but there is something that just seems to taste better when they are from your own garden. I know that's silly, but it just seems that way.

We have started having heavy rains.Monsoon this year was very late.Rains can play havoc to your garden.I have put away my good pots inside the green house.I have a small patch of vegetable garden which I have covered with a polythene sheet. There are quite a few plants in there.I hope I get some vegetables.I can see the water all stagnated on my lawn.I just wait for it clear up.I have to have nice sunny days before I can start my gardening in full swing for the next season.Though I miss doing gardening during this season I still manage to do a little bit in the hot house.Hope you move into your own home soon and enjoy your gardening.Gardening is such a pleasurable hobby.

In this old house, the gutters were not put in straight so every time it rains here, I get a flood where I have my few plants alongside the house. I am always out there digging ditches and bailing things out. THAT I won't miss!

Me too. I wish I was already in a new home so I knew what I had to work with. It will give me some sense of satisfaction to be planning.

I'm glad it's winding down, only because I learned so much from my friends here about how I want to plant my garden next year and can hardly wait for the new season! My tomato plant has 15 now and more flowers. They're all still green, though, I hope they ripen.

If the pepper plants are still producing, let them continue. You never know what you might still get from them!

Well we didn't have a garden this year but we will definitely have one next year! I hate that Summer is almost over. Time goes by way too fast! We didn't get to do anything fun this Summer either because of money issues but I know things are going to get better. I am going back to school! I got approved for financial aid and am going to take online classes. I haven't decided on what kind of degree I am going to go for yet. Also I am going to continue to write articles for income but I want something to fall back on, just in case. :)

"melancholy" that's exactly the word I was looking for as I started to read your discussion - that's how I feel but am trying to keep my spirits up with plans for next year and starting a mini-greenhouse in the loft of our house to start some plants during the winter, mainly a couple things I want to grow but the growing season is too short here in Michigan. The loft is the warmest place in the house all the time, besides the huge windows there are also 4 skylights, and it's practically empty right now :) sounds to me like a great place to start some plants in pots :) that will at least keep me busy part of the winter.

I guess I am feeling the exact opposite of everyone. Summer time is hard here in florida cause of the extreme heat and dryness. So I am just getting serious in the garden and will have great harvests (I hope) in the next couple of months and throughout winter and spring. We still garden here in the summer it is just harder, but some of us are die hards.

I should also add I am also praying that next year we'll have more rain than this year as we're planning to double the size of our garden and as dry as it's been this year I've had to water every few days (like tomorrow) and with even more space I don't know how I will keep up with it all.

Ohh..My husband and I are very satisfied with our first garden and we are planning already to expand the area since we are very successful in our first trial..LOL! We still have tomatoes, peppers, okra and melon which are having a lot of fruits and veggies still, and our raspberries are doing good also!

I'm still waiting for the tomatoes to ripen, but I've had lots of cucumbers and beans. The second crop of raspberries will take a few more days to ripen, as we've had some cool, cloudy days lately. I only got one strawberry from my patch, but they're putting out runners like crazy. Maybe next year (this was the first year for them). I tried planting corn (three times!) but just as soon as they were looking like they might make it, something came along and snipped them at ground level. So, no corn.

Squirrels, too, believe it or not. I didn't until I saw one take down a full-grown plant. But my corn never got past the 6" seedling stage this year.

Yeah, I was just thinking of this when I was wondering my container garden this morning. My cucumber and squash plants haven't produced anything though they have had plenty of blooms on them. My cherry tomato plant has slowed down. And I got a large tomatoe plant about a month ago that is just now starting to produce tomatoes. I do have a yard for a proper garden, which I might prepare this fall so I will have a little plot to plant plants next year!

I envy your garden Ldyjarhead... eventhough you say it isn't a "real" garden. We moved this summer so the vegetables I planted had to be given away to friends & neighbors, so I don't have anything to show for my effort. :( I'd love to have fresh veggies at my fingertips. I had planted tomatoes, green peppers and squash. I even planted some basil, which I had never done before. In years past, I tried canteloupe (got a couple) & corn (got some good ones). We're in another apartment currently while we save some $$ and look for a house in this area. I can't wait to be able to plant a "real" garden again. Good luck in your new home!

Your tomato and pepper plants will stop blooming when the nighttime temperatures drop consistently to about 55 degrees (I think that's right), but the produce will continue to ripen if the days are warm and there's not a hard frost. I haven't had the heart to even try to garden the past 3 years. I've tried container gardens etc. but it seems that about the time tomatoes start blooming here the leaf hoppers come roaring through. They carry a virus, I don't remember the name of it, that turns the leaves purple and causes them to turn their under sides up. Then the plants die. I'll have to invest in some row covers if I want to grow a garden out here. I'm thinking about putting some lettuce seed in a pot and just seeing if I can harvest a little until the end of October (if I can find seed this time of year). I hope your reasestate deal goes through soon. I know what it's like being in "limbo" waiting.

The lettuce did so well earlier in that little pot, I'm hopeful that I'll get another batch. I love fresh lettuce on my tuna sandwich! Surprisingly, I didn't have any problem with bugs or other pests here, just the baby bunnies that ate my beans initially.

Oh, yes. Bunnies. I guess the reason the bunnies never got into mine was because the bugs got them first. I certainly have plenty of rabbits around here.

Well, it is hard to believe it is the last day of August, and almost time to start thinking about Fall. We did not have that much of a Summer really here in Seattle, so to think about a Garden is sometimes not worth it anymore. And gorwing a Flower garden, etc. is becoming harder as well. I know these are things that I miss though. When the fall comes, comes raking the leaves, and such and then winter. You just need to find things to do to keep you busy, and go from there.

Now that the Hot Hot Hot summer is over I can get serious about gardening here in FL. I have pulled the tomato plants that I put out earlier in the season and I am putting out new tomato plants. I am starting seeds. I am getting the raised beds built and ready for all my seedlings. I love gardening. I can't wait till my harvest start coming in again.

We still have tomatoes and cherry tomatoes growing. Our cukes and zukes did not do well this year. We put the zukes in a different part of the garden and they didn't like it. The cukes, I don't know what happened. We do have some some green beans and japanese eggplant still producing, but they have slowed down. DH is going to plant some more lettuce since the weather is cooling down a bit.
