Hacking Cough, Choking Sounds?

We just got our puppy Saturday night. Ever since we got him he would sniff around and kinda blow out his nose and sometimes sneeze. He had his well-puppy check up on Tuesday to check him to make sure he was "sellable" by the Pet store. Wednesday he started a cough, it is a hacking cough that sounds like he is choking. When I take him outside to go potty he tries to eat grass, bugs...etc... anything he can get his mouth on. I try to encourage him not too, but he's a puppy and refuses to listen. It honestly sounds like he should cough something up. It is even waking him up at night and he still does it even after drinking water. He does it inside and outside. I had thought it was the collar possibly too tight, but I can put like 2 fingers in between his neck and the collar. Any ideas? I really don't have the money to take him to the vet and them say nothing is wrong, anybody know what I could try? THANK YOU! Have a great weekend!

My Yorkie does that when she gets super excited! So does my Shih Tzu. Maybe it is just an excitement thing? My yorkie also eats anything she can get her mouth on, even her own poo. I have got to find a way to make her stop.

I have took her collar completely off and she doesn't do it. But, if she has it on- even loose she does it still. But, she has gotten completely better other than everynow and then.

I have had my Yorkie for four weeks now and she is doing the same thing. I haven't taken her to the vet either. She doesn't wear a collar all of the time and it hasn't made a difference. She seems to also make the coughing/choking sounds when she'll really excited too. I know this doesn't help much, but at least you know you're not alone.
