How do I get connected to the internet? HELP

I have a laptop, and when I first got it I plugged everything in and put the card in the side of it. I think the card is something to do with getting connected to the internet, well when I put it in the laptop it asked me something about connecting to the internet. I clicked off of that and just put the laptop and everything away that day.
This might sound like a silly question but I thought we would have to pay for having internet connection for that laptop. Well my sisters friend said no, that we don't... and that we should be able to get it connected to the internet already. She said that she got her laptop connected on the internet without paying or anything. When I put the card it and that box popped up about the internet, I think that is how she got connected.
Ok so I tried this yesterday, I plugged everything in. I put the card it and nothing popped up. At the bottom right of the corner on the screen there were two computers, at first they both of an x on them. One of them would say "a network cable is unplugged" and then the other one would say "no network available" or something like that. Well then after a few minutes the one computer icon would say that I have something and that the signal was strong.
Although I tried to go on the internet and still nothing. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or what. If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

Maybe you need a wireless router to hook up to your other computer. Or is the network card in your laptop suppose to give you internet connection. I'm not to familiar with hoe lap top works. I just know my niece has one and she runs of my sisters desktop. Which has a Lindsey router connected to it.

see this is what is confusing me. We have a regular desktop with a modem. My sisters friend said that, that is all they have and they run their laptops off of it. So I don't know if she is confused and they have a router or what. I do have this card that came with the computer, maybe that is the network card. Thanks.

# Turn off ur pc ,router and modem
# Switch on the modem first than turn on your computer.
# Open the wireless router configuration page by typing ur router's IP. Default is 192.168.1.1 ,Login using ur username and password, which must be admin and password
# Your connection will be detected as PPPoE. Put your airtel username and password Configure your wireless settings
I think you have to set up your file sharing also
