How do I get connected to the internet? HELP

I have a laptop, and when I first got it I plugged everything in and put the card in the side of it. I think the card is something to do with getting connected to the internet, well when I put it in the laptop it asked me something about connecting to the internet. I clicked off of that and just put the laptop and everything away that day. This might sound like a silly question but I thought we would have to pay for having internet connection for that laptop. Well my sisters friend said no, that we don't... and that we should be able to get it connected to the internet already. She said that she got her laptop connected on the internet without paying or anything. When I put the card it and that box popped up about the internet, I think that is how she got connected. Ok so I tried this yesterday, I plugged everything in. I put the card it and nothing popped up. At the bottom right of the corner on the screen there were two computers, at first they both of an x on them. One of them would say "a network cable is unplugged" and then the other one would say "no network available" or something like that. Well then after a few minutes the one computer icon would say that I have something and that the signal was strong. Although I tried to go on the internet and still nothing. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or what. If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it. Thanks.
