Why do we celebrate New Year's Eve with such importance, exuberance, and zest? Is it just a big reason to throw a party all over the world? Is it because so many people are so unhappy with their lives and they think the beginning of a new year will mark some type of change for them, having their life "start over" or suddenly get better with the passing of a year?
Of course, not everyone who looks forward to making resolutions is unhappy. New Year's resolutions have always been a funny thing to me. If you want to change something about yourself, why not do it now? Why must we note a date that we should start having this change take effect? Wouldn't it be better to start on whatever goal we set as soon as possible rather than to wait? Many people resolve to stop some bad habits they have or change jobs in the new year. Of course, it does seem like that would be the logical time to make a "fresh start." Sometimes certain people need to psych themselves up to start a goal. They want to give themselves some extra time to perhaps enjoy whatever it is they want to change. For example, if someone wants to quit smoking, this is a very difficult task to accomplish and someone might not exactly be looking forward to it. They also might need some time in their mind to prepare for the adjustment and maybe even to enjoy the habit a bit longer.
Some people do just live for the party, and what other time is there a party with millions and millions of people celebrating all over the world, than on New Year's Eve? There are television shows on every channel celebrating the event, parties all over the place at every corner, most establishments offer some type of special celebration for the day, and it's considered a holiday where most people even have off from work on New Year's Day. The news even usually has some comments to make regarding this holiday. Some people buy special attire and make reservations and plans months in advance in preparation for this particular holiday. Just about everyone celebrates in some way or another, whether it's out drinking at a bar with friends, spending time at home with family, friends, and loved ones, celebrating religiously, or some other acknowledgement of the end of the year and the beginning of another year on this earth.
It always seems, especially as one gets older, that the year passes by so quickly. We look forward to December 31 all year and it comes and goes. One moment it's January and the next moment it's August. It seems the time has just zipped past and feels soemtimes like just yesterday it was January. Hopefully most of that time was enjoyed and we were successful in implementing whatever our hopes and goals might have been. Why waste time planning to start your goals once the new year comes? Unless it is absolutely necessary to wait, I say, don't delay and procrastinate; start all your goals now!
So do you make goals and plans for the New Year each time? How often do you keep these goals and how often are you successful with these resolutions?

Best wishes to you.
I have resolved to become more active. I always seem to do it for awhile but then stop again. I need to keep it up rather than having all the hiatuses I do.
Thanks again!

Hello, Bethany1202.
The year starts... And everybody starts waiting. Waiting for the next year. Oh, 2008! Everybody said it was going to be the best year ever. 2008 started, and people were expecting so much! And 2008 is ending. People do not look back to their achievements this year. No, they are not realizing the many they have earned, the amount of effort that was put into their tasks. They only want to know about 2009. Oh, 2009! Everybody is saying that it is going to be the best year ever.
In fact, January is the tomorrow. Soon, it is going to be the today. And, when we start thinking about it, January will already be yesterday. And then we will remember that January will be tomorrow as well.
People wait for the New Year to celebrate, to have fun, to drink. To create their new resolutions. It's easy to say that you are going to start changing on the New Year. Difficult is to change now. It's always easy to leave for tomorrow what you can do today. Why not say: "When I enter New Year I will already have stopped smoking", instead of saying "I'm going to stop smoking in 2009".
Anyway, people create an illusion about 2009. They all think that the next year can be better. And in fact it can. It will only depend on how much do they want it. How much are they going to act towards it, so that 2009 becomes their best year.
I do not set goals for the New Year. I set goals for today.
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

Sounds great. The time passes so quickly! One must live for today, I agree.
