You are in the middle of a huge traffic standstill. You're alone driving. How would you while the time away? It would be interesting to learn methods on how to counter boredom or impatience when waiting for the traffic lights to turn green. Let's say it takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour, how would you spend your time? Your comments would surely allow other mylotters to learn about how the methods one can employ at times like these. Thanks in advance for any contribution.

This happens all the time! If it doesn't look like it will be for very long, I sing along with the radio and read people's bumper stickers. If it's longer, there's always at least one book and one magazine in the car, so I read with a careful peripheral view of the traffic. I've also sometimes used the cleaner and papertowels that are always in the back seat to clean the inside of the car. I hate to get stuck in these things, but if it's after 6 AM when I leave for work, it's going to happen.

I have lived in some big cities where traffic is horrible. There is no point getting upset since you can't do much about it. I usually just sit and listen to music and wait.

If I could see miles of congestion ahead of me, and I was sure that I would be there for a long time, I would probably reach over to the seat beside me and begin working on something for college. I might even put my vehicle in park and turn it off to conserve gas and battery power, I don't know. That and I would call my mother to see what she thinks that I should do. Obviously I am going to have to wait it out. I'm not that impatient when it comes to certain things, so I think that even if I couldn't find something to do, I could still ride it out and be fine.

Yup, it's a daily affair, this being caught in traffic jams. I'd listen to songs - I've got a cd changer in the car, that takes up to 6 disks, and I'd be listening to my favourite songs over and over - BoyZone, Beatles, BeeGees, Blues, Cliff Richard. Or else I'd call someone on my mobile - I've got a hands free kit,and talk while I drive. I'd have like to write down obserations & thoughts; which is not possible if I'm driving!

Text friends, think of a random quote. Think about philosophy of science, no kidding. Hehe. Uhm. Listen to the radio, sing along. Listen to talk shows. Play a game on my phone maybe? But then if I weren't driving alone, I'd... sleep. :D

I have internet activated on my mobile and use this feature whenever i am trapped in a traffic jam. Keeping track of the markets and checking of my mail are the main things i do during this time. If still some time remains i enjoy the music and wait for the traffic to clear.

I would probably spend that time thinking or listening to music. I tend to think a lot as I am driving and often come up with creative ideas during that time. I try to keep a notebook with me to write them down so I can use them later.

I also always carry my camera with me. So I would possibly take a few photos to sell as stock images or to the local newspaper if it was newsworthy.

First off, as I carry a small hand held tape recorder with me, I would be writing as I'm in traffic and probably about the traffic to boot. Secondly, I might listen to audio books, my newest joy in life, on my car CD player. Thirdly, but only if I had a hands free phone, I might talk on it catching up with old friends. Of course all this is moot because I don't drive. Just the thoughts from the top of my head.

Um well you really have no choice but do just stick it out and go with the traffic don't you, but I guess i would just listen to the radio or put on a cd and sing along to it and hope that no one looks at me funny from the other cars and also I have got hands free in my car so if i got sick of singing i would ring someone and chat but other then that there is much that you are able to do when you are stuck in traffic!

Saviour-V teleports in... In some cases, the traffic here in Malaysia isn't too bad, but there are a number of big jams that really slow things down. For those situations... Saviour-V flips out a CD... ...I usually put in my recording of the Contra 4 game soundtrack on. And when the traffic really intensifies, I pull down my windshields, turn off the air-conditioning, and raise the volume a few notches. That accomplishes two things, really...one, if anyone manages to recognize the old tunes based off the original, it'll be their entertainment. Two, if they don't like my music, they'd be inclined to get away. So far, I seem to be accomplishing item #2, because whenever I put that music on, the traffic usually seems to speed up. Like magic. Saviour-V grins slightly... I also have a copy of Bob Proctor's "The Secret - Science of Getting Rich", which I listen to from time to time, to gain some knowledge about life, and then some. But I doubt anyone else here has either one of those things, so...is anyone interested in buying either item? ^_^; Saviour-V grins, and teleports out...

I live in the suburbs of Chicago, so i knwo all about setting in traffic for long periods of time. Generally i will crank up the radio and start singing..turn it down a bit when i start moving on the road of course....or since i have a cell phone i will take that time to make some calls.

Look at the other cars, count how many of each color, think of odd ways to get around the traffic (like the car starting to fly over the others) Make absurd emergency plans in case ninjas attacked, make up poems in my head, try to think of names that I could name my kids

I am very fortunate because we don't have traffic jam here in my hometown, Davao City. I've been to some busy places like Manila and Cebu (here in the Philippines), Whew! It was such a terrible traffic!. Sometimes you can't keep yourself cool and become hot-tempered. Aside from traffic, the weather is very very hot. Well, I am a music-lover and to keep myself relaxed and enjoyed while in traffic, I always bring my iPod with me. I downloaded a lot of my favorite songs from love songs to techno to alternative...and a lot more as well as movies like Spiderman and some latest movies. Listening to my favorite songs helps me become relaxed. I can also sing along with my favorite love songs. Or watching my favorite movies makes me entertained. Hehehe! These ways I tend to forget traffic.

Listen to one of my 30 or 40 tapes I have in my car. I was once in a snow storm and it tok me three hours to get to my destination. That would dsrive most people crazy. Not me. I just pop in one of my tapes, turn it up and enjoy!

There is no sense in getting upset because that is not going to make things go any faster. I always have a book in my car and when that happens I just read. I also have CD's in my car of my favorite music which is soft soothing music and I listen to that. It doesn't take long before the cars are moving again.

if i get stuck in the traffic i'll usually sing along to my favourite tunes, that helps to take my mind off the traffic jam and other crazy drivers on the road
