What do you think of nerds?

At my school all the smart people or people that like work is called nerds but when i looked up in the dictionary, it said nerds were people who were stupid, idiotic and foolish.
Everyone in our school hate nerds except nerds themself. What do you think about them?

I don't really dislike them. I like them somehow. They seem very diligent with their work, serious people and conservative in a way. Even before I was schooling, I had encountered several people in school. They are the ones who wear thick glasses and loner. I would like to befriend them if possible.
