Deviled Ham - Have you tried it?

United States

The oldest registered food trademark still in use in the United States is the red devil on cans of Underwood's deviled ham. It dates back to 1886. I have never got the nerve up to try it, am I missing anything great? I have had it in my cart a couple of times, but that little voice in my head says put it back and I do.

I love deviled ham! I add mayo and pickles to it sometimes and eat it on a sandwich. Being from the south (USA) we keep a disaster kit ready in case of hurricanes......and deviled ham is ALWAYS in mine!

That's how I was thinking of making it for the game this Sunday. Where in the South are you located? I am in Maryland and we are suppose to get remnants of Hanna on Saturday. We also have a friend who is in Florida moving this weekend, hopefully Hanna will spare them some. Thanks for the response and welcome to myLot!

Thank you for the welcome! I am enjoying myLot immensely so far. I could definately spend too much time here! LOL I am in south Alabama, about an hour inland from the Gulf....close to Mobile. My wishes for a safe journey for your friend...and I hope Hannah doesnt give yall too much trouble. We dodged the bullet with Gustav, although we got some good winds and rain off of it. If you'd like you can add me as a friend ;) We can never have too many of those!

Oh that sounds like a good idea, mixing some in with the egg mixture. If my kids like it, I just might have to do that. Thanks for the suggestion Antiquelady!

Hi kimbers867. Oh, that's such a fascinating little bit of trivia! I didn't know that Underwood's Deviled Ham was the oldest registered food trademark in the U.S. Of course, I've eaten many sandwiches out of the deviled ham in my younger years. I don't think I've had it over the past 25 or 30 years, though. I used to think it was pretty good, particularly with mustard on bread. I wonder now about the fats and sodium in it. Now you've got me curious. Anyhoo, no, I don't think you're missing anything all that great but, who knows, you and your kids might actually like it! Plus, it would be nice to keep on hand, since it's canned, as a backup.

I really think my 7 year old will probably like it, she loves trying new things. I think I am getting a can this week to serve while we watch the football game. Thanks PearlGrace.

I have tried it a few times. I actually have a can in the pantry right now. It is ok, but you are not really missing anything. I have it in the pantry for those times when you just never know. I like to keep a stock of canned foods on hand and this is one of the canned foods I keep just in case. NOT something I eat on a regular basis though.

My parents liked it. We had a few cans in the house back then. I did buy some on my own one day and couldn't spit it out fast enough, YUK! I love ham, but not like that.

OOOhh interesting. We never had it in our house because my dad was a very picky eater, and he had the nerve to call me that. The man wouldn't try anything new! At least I will. I might give it a whirl. Thanks for your honest response.
