Do you ever worry that people know too much?!

September 1, 2008 4:16pm CST
Do you worry about how much information about yourself you share at mylot? It occured to me the other day that on here people don't really know that much about me, noone on here even knows my name, which is wierd considering how we talk about some pretty personal subjects! Society today is very suspicious and people are always dubious about sharing personal details, they shred bills, anything with their address on etc, and yet online a lot of people expose loads of personal information about themselves! Is this something you guys think about or is not everyone paranoid?! xxx

I don't worry, no. I have never really shared enough information abiut myself for this to be of any concern. My surname is not known; my exact location is not known; and I have certainly never shared any personal data related to accounts or passwords or anything like that. It will always remain this way too!

I only worry about the incriminating photos Munchkin. LOL. I have never used my real name or address, phone number etc on myLot. Although some myLot friends do have those things. But they are people that I have come to trust. I am quite careful what I share really. My online side is only one aspect of me. I will always answer questions about myself, but there is a line that I draw and over which I will not cross. You've just got to find what the line is. I think that there is a world of difference between "Have you ever had surgery on an intimate part of your body" and "What's your bank card PIN number". The answers to which by the way are "No" and "Can't remember. Doesn't matter there's nothing in there anyway"!

Hehe, i would be worried about them too! I'm the same as you, i will share information with people i have come to know and trust but there are certainly limits! I'm pleased to know you've never had surgery on any intimate parts of your body, but am hoping that mrs p1kef1sh has a better memory that you when it comes to the bank card or you might end up a bit stuck! lol xvx

I don't think any of it really matters. sure here we're talking about personal things, but we're not actually giving out INFORMATION like numbers, addresses, or anything like that. The closest we get to giving out e-mail addresses even is via private messaging for friends here on Mylot. So really I am not too worried. Peopl here can know all about my childhood and tragedies and comedies of my life, and that's fine, because they'll never know how to actually physically get a hold of me :) So it works out pretty well I'd say! Plus being able to talk about personal things is sort of a good therapy for a lot of people
2 Sep 08
A lot of people say that and i agree, it can probably be pretty theraputic to let out our innermost feelings and thought here without the danger of anyone from our "real life" knowing what we're saying or thinking! (not that i have anything awful to hide! lol) I'm the same as you people on here probably know a fair bit about my personality, like and dislikes and the things i have experienced in my life, and will probably find out more, that's fine , and probably a good thing! It's not something i worry about either, just one of those thoughts that strikes you when you're doing the dishes or something equally boring! lol thanks for responding! xxx

yes i do think about it and i try to be aware of what i'm revealing and who i'm revealing it to. I shed my bills and junk mail and all that offline but a pefect example is conversation with p1sh the other day. I mentioned that i wasn't a plain jane because i had a y and obviously he has my firstname from here and my photo and he goes and finds me on facebook. When i first responded i was like wow how did you find me? but of course first name + middle name + photo it probably wasn't that hard. Makes you think concidering that was just one converstation only takes someone with a bit of brains doesn't it.

Woah guys, chill out!! hehe anyway what's all this facebook befriending, and why am i not involved!?! lol I get where you're coming from mands, if people want to they can find out more than you think! I think that on mylot though, to find anything worthwhile out about me you'd have to sift through all of my discussions and responses, and even then it wouldn't tell you much so probably just isn't worth it! You should be flattered p1ke, she said you've got brains! hehe thanks for responding,as always, guys xvx

I guess I am from Pakistan thats why never thought of keeping my personal information a secret. If I would be in USA, UK or somewhere else, I would have thought hiding my personal details. The reason, I don't come across any member of MyLot who is from Pakistan. Other members who are added as my friends are all from other countries all over the world. Its good that you hide your personal details because people are not the same as they were before. With increasing terrorists, everyone must be careful.

I'm paranoid and try not to share too much. If you are writing something you wouldn't want your mom to read, it is probably not good to post it (ha ha).

Hi Munchkin, I don't really because although I type a lot of discussions and responses from my life unless they analysed every one they would not really have a clue, yes I shred appers etc but what is someone really going to gai from knowing I love bathing in the sea, that I was a bit of a wild child in the past, that I love cats and dogs. Huggles Ellie :D

Good day... Maybe it's part of the allure or mystic forums online are giving it's member. I mean you are not forced to give your real name or your real picture but some members do it anyway. I mean if you would consider trust then don't give too much information about yourself and stick with the issue you want to share, of course sharing an issue also entails giving a little information about one self and that should be all. It's like consulting a shrink but of course the shrink is certified and verified as well and mylot isn't but you should also consider that mylot is free and in fact pays you to share while shrinks aren't and we instead pay them. Bottom line it is with in our power and rights to give or with hold any information about ourselves.

Hehe i like the way you think of mylot!! I don't think i have ever given my realy name or anything out, it's not really been a conscious thing but there';s just never been a need to! I think we do need to be a bit careful, but there is a difference between carefull and paranoid! lol thanks for the response! xxx

Hi Munchkin, to me that is what the internet is all about-anonymity. I may say quite a few things about me on here, but I never say anything that can be used to identify me. Sure, some hacker culd probably track me down, but would it really be worth his bother. My friends on here can read a few things about me here like my likes and dislikes, my first name and a few other minor details but thats it. In all, I dont think you have to much to worry about as long as you dont tell others who you are! Hugs, Tianna

I'm not 1 to give out personal information that could be used in fraud. I refuse to give out my last name middle name, birthday, a very select few friends online have my personal email. I wont use a credit card online. I'm just a little paranoid but that's how i am.

Sharing info via internet may be dangerous, anyways i dont share much and you should do not too, why to do so? Just maybe share a little with the people you know for long time, everyone dosn't need to know everything about you...maybe they don't care so you take a risk for nothing.

I agree you do need to be very careful, here on mylot there's not any need to share anything that could cause a problem so it's not something that i really worry about, but the internet is something we do need to be a bit cautious with i think!! thanks for the response!! xx

When you say personal details, what do you mean? DO you mean that they share their real life identity with you? Share details that will allow you to recognize them should you meet on the street? Most of the time, people on the internet are more "open" in a sense that, they are able to share something which they think no one will know cos they are typing behind a desk, in front of a computer. Wearing a mask call their avatar, they think that it would be too remote for anyone to actually meet them up in real life to do any harm if they were to share some of their secrets online. That is good as it is an avenue for them to let out their frustrations. And the best part of it is, they are interacting with another person. That person could be anyone. It doesn't matter. What matters is the one they are talking to, is another person in front of a computer somewhere in the world. As long as they can keep their real identity safe, I guess, they will feel safe enough to share some of their little details in life.

Yeah, that is a good practice to keep. I am sure most of us are like that. But there are also many who do not do so. This is especially obvious in sites like friendster and facebook and myspace. Already there are so many stories about people getting their identity stolen. Their credibility questioned. And so much more. If only these people are wiser about divulging their info when they are online socializing.

I think it's easy to forget that everyone can see what we put up on these sites as we tend to only interact with friends over them, but you're right we all need to be a bit careful about what we divulge! xxx

Yeah i think people share more things over the internet of a private nature, as they feel that people don't really know them! But i wouldn't share details like my name or address, phone numbers things like that because like you say people hide behind an avatar and sometimes they are not really who they say they are! thanks for the response! xxx

I think it's wise to be cautious about what we tell people online, as you never know who may be reading it! I don't think we should let it spoil our fun here at mylot though, i don't think it's often necessary to tell others too much about ourselves here! thanks for the response! happy mylotting! xxx

That's a good questions munch! I guess that's why it's anonymous! Actually, I've made some friends that I speak to off the lot that actually have my real name and email addy. I have nothing to hide and I'm a pretty open and honest person. I think sometimes that's my problem. I don't worry about people knowing too much about me and sometimes it gets me into trouble. My bf says I tend to talk too much! He is an extremly private person. He doesn't even tell his friends or family where he lives which kind of bothers me since some of them don't even know about me! So we are opposites! (last discussion!). Like I said, maybe I'm too open and I should be more careful, but I just am not like that. I'm not paranoid. You probably are right in your thinking. I'm the one who should be watching what I say. Sometimes I do say to much.

Yeah that probably is why it's anonymous! you and your boyfriend probably balance eachother out, which might just be why it works!! I don't really worry about it, like you i have nothing to hide, i'm quite open and honest too! Sometimes i say too much too though, i start talking and just don't seem to stop when other people probably would have, i don't think it's necessarily a bad thing though, it just shows that i don't have anything to hide or be ashamed of!! thanks for the response my lovely! xvx

If you want to share personal information or credit card numbers, pin, documents number and that kind of thing, then your best choise is to use ssl emails with data encrypted and certificates.. never do it in forums or discussions topics.. that is so insecure..
