Do tournament judges prefer less flashy bo staffs?

My little boy just took a bronze in the National AKJU tournament held in Ohio and we were wondering what he could do to get the edge.... I was wondering if judges look for traditional bo's versus the flashy/colored bo's. DOes any one know?
