You can help. Talk your friend into getting the proper help. Your friend needs to call a local mental heath professional. If you have no medical insurance there are local places funded by the state to help you get treatment. Once your friend gets the counseling and medication that is needed to deal with depression everyone will see a change. I am on medication for this disorder, and it helps a great deal.

I don't know if you can ever totally "eliminate" depression; but exercise tends to help me get out of my sulky moods. I believe your body produces endorphines that induce feelings of euphoria. I'm not a doctor; but this is what I've heard. And I do feel physically better after a good 3-mile run which also makes me feel better all around, with a better attitude. I hope your friend feels better soon.

First off as other had stated take him into a mental health professional to get him evaluated. Then take him to the clinica doctors to make sure his blood sugars, and minerals, diet, and regular health is fine. Making sure one is eating right, and sleeping right is a big one. Then being a good supportive friend a listening ear.... - DNatureofDTrain
