Yikes I Can Assemble A Captain's Bed On My Own...Why Can't I Open..???

.....A darn package! As many of my friends know, last month I finally got my new bed and mattress...and it was one of those do-it-your-selfers to assemble...(and yes, I do plan to eventually photograph my glorious efforts..LOL) I managed to assemble it all by myself...yahoo. So what I can't for the life of me figure out...why was I able to assemble an over 100 pound bed with a 35 pound bookcase headboard and can't for the life of me open a simple friggin package! For instance..Today I had to put new ink cartridges in my printer as I'm starting to print up all the paperwork I need for my grant work I'm doing --I need three sets of each piece of paperwork...not just one..So a LOT of printing. So I'm trying to open the blasted box that the ink cartridges come in..Nearly ripped off a fingernail in the process....THEN...the ink cartridge itself is in another container type thing...gee...that was FUN to try and open...NOT. Earlier today, too, I received a book in the mail and don't ask the struggle to get THAT opened... Prey tell...don't tell me it's just me, but do any of you have problems opening something? A soda bottle? A jar of spaghetti sauce? Any kind of package? That packaging inside a cereal box? Anything??

I found one way that seems to be a bit easier for opening jars..I slip a knife under the edge of the jar top and that seems to break the vacuum seal of a jar making it easier to open...uh, sometimes...LOL

It's not just you - I think the worst are things that come in those vacum sealed hard plastic cases. You know, the ones you need the chain saw to open - believe me I have broken many many a fingernail on those things. Another problem I have are the child proof caps on things - you know the ones you get a child to open for you - seriously I am always having to get my son to open the stupid things. I understand why and they are safer for kids but seriously most kids I know are smart and it doesn't take them a minute to figure them out.

I hate those plastic containers. I use a butcher knife to open those things usually. Another nightmare is trying to get that tape off the edges of new CD's. Ugghhh! Hahahahaha! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Oh I hate those vacuum sealed packages too...like the kind for batteries? I've long given up trying to open them the "normal" way and get the scissors. The real kicker is when a package says "easy open" ....uh, no it's NOT

hahahahaha! I also hate the foil package that ink cartidges arrive in. I really, really hate those dreaded shrink wrapped hard plastic containers. Those I end up using my Ginsu knife to open. That cuts anything and stays sahrp as hell. Hahahaha! Some chips are also hellish to open. Pull too hard and the bag rips sending chips flying all over. HAHAHAHAHHA! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

All the blinking time, Pye! I have little grip in my hands, once had it tested at the bottom 5% of the population (my co-workers were stunned.) I've learned to get around things, find things that help my leverage, never use my fingernails (that break if you look at them wrong.) I have a thing called a "jar wrench" by Kitchen Wizard, that I use if I don't have the roomie around to help me. Heck, even had strangers open soda bottles for me at times!

Thank goodness I'm not the only one. I used to have a great gizmo for opening up jars..not really a jar wrench...it was an old thing of my great-grandmother's that still worked...it disappeared somehow and haven't thought to buy a new one. I'll have to look what that jar wrench you mention looks like

Jar wrench - The best thing for the weak of grip!
I don't think they make them like mine anymore - I actually got mine when we cleaned out my friend, Elaine's mom's place. Patty looked hopefully at it when we did mom's and I told her I had one already - she looked really happy!

lol! I nearly had a hernia, the other day, trying to open a sports drink. The perforation wasn't perforated right. I often have to resort to scissors, to open bags of chips or what have you. I mean, they don't want people getting into these things easily, but come on... Do they really have to make them so they can barely be gotten into at all? (Granted, some chip bags I may be able to open without scissors, but I'd prefer not eating them off the floor.)

You know what's also hard to open? Those pop-up cans. Supposedly those cans are supposed to make it easier and we don't have to use a can opener....oh, yeah? And those edges on the lid are freaking sharp!

Yeah. I just love the way some of those will come part way open, then the tab breaks off. Not! If you don't want us using your products, why sell them to us? lol

We have a say for that in Australia. We call it "Child proof"... lol But yes... I have trouble opening many things. I think it is a combination of new technology which use better glues and better ways to seal things... and a precaution to prevent people tempering with goods. In the food industry... they had to make packaging safer so that it could not be opened... and closed again after tempering with it. A decade ago... there were a few cases of people poisonning food on the supermarket shelves and then demanding a ranson. Again... it is the times we live in...

"Child proof"---kids are actually more likely to be able to open things up easier than we adults can. LOL...One of the things that set better packaging years ago was that time when some maniac decided to tamper with bottles of Tylenol and put poison in the pills....so yes, can see the need for safety measures there

You have already mentioned the cd's and this is my biggest complaint. I get so annoyed trying to remove those security seals then the plastic, by the time I am finished I am not even in the mood anymore to listen to the cd. Then when I look at the kitchen knife I just used it has this residue from the security seal that takes forever to clean off. I can't remember when was the last time I bought a cd!

I have the ideal package opener here. Never misses a package in the mail nor a jar in the kitchen. Always available and free to use every time. Nary a complaint, but sometimes a titter or an outright giggle. My response? "Laugh it up fuzzball your day is coming."

Oh I get so upset with packages also. I complain all the time and I wonder what it is like for these people who have problems with their hands? I keep my scissors handy and instead of fighting and getting upset trying to open it I just snip it off. I also hate the packages of electronics or other things that are in real hard plastic, out comes the scissors again. As for jars I have one of the best jar/bottle openers, it is a real old one and can be used on many different sizes with just a gentle twist. And at Christmas time with the kids toys in packages you can't get open real quick? Gotta get the knife or scissors out again. Don't even get me started on tylenol bottles or other medicine bottles, it is hard when you can see too well to line up the marks on the bottle and the lid, I just feel for them and hope that it is lined up just right to get it opened. After trying to open up other things I do need the tylenol. hahaha

Oh I hate that stiff plastic packaging too...like even for batteries. Don't get me going about medicine bottles...Not long ago I bought a bottle of aspirin and it's one of those deals you have to line the top with the arrow and just push with your thumb...yeah, sure

I know how you feel i always have trouble opening childrens medicine bottles. The ones with the child proof lid that my children can always seem to manage to open but i can't. Don't see what is child proof about that. My partner always struggles with the packing on DVDs. One time there was an unopened dvd on top of the telly and my two year old came along and opened it no problem. My partner just looked at him and said "how the heck did you do that". Fancy being showed up by a two year old LOL.

Yes, so much for the child proof lids on medicine bottles right? Oh, that's funny your two year old was able to open the DVD movie...takes me forever to open those up.

That's really funny Pye! I have trouble opening everything. If it wasn't for that blue rubber opening jar thingy I'd never be able to open up a jar or bottle of anything! I have to open everything with a knife which means I take my life in my hands literally! I run the risk of stabbing myself every time I have to open a package of anything. In fact, on Saturday I received a package in the mail. It was wrapped exceptionally well! First it had brown wrapping on the outside taped all over with not a spot to get the knife in! Then when I finally got that off (after risking my life) and I got to the box that was all wrapped up with more brown wrapping! After I finally sliced my way through that to get to the contents of the box thankfully with all my ten fingers in tact and no blood spilled I was able to breathe a sign of relief! How do you like that story Pyewacket?lol

It's not you. It's the packaging. I think manufacturers &/or distributors package things the way they do not only to make it difficult. Sure, it protects the product inside during transport, but ... someone actually mentioned the same thing about this situation in my "Brand New CD discussion. They actually make things so tough to open because they are hoping that someone may lose patience &/or get agitated, & perhaps break the product they are trying to get at. Then the customer would have to go back to the store to buy a new one. Uh - does it make sense? Or has this consipracy theory revealed that someone swiped my marbles?

Oh I've had trouble before. I don't know why but sometimes I have trouble opening jars. When I am at home, I'm usually the one to open jars however when I'm at the apartment it's like I can NEVER open anything. I have to have my partner do it all the time. It's scary really. I'm not sure why that is, I wish I knew. I had to buy a new ink cartridge for my printer the other day myself. I managed to get the box open but for the life of me could not rip open the plastic like wrap around the cartridge. We had to take a pair of scissors to it.

There is nothing worse at Christmas or birtdays when I have to try and open packages for the kids for the gifts they recieved . It is ridiculous when it takes an hour to try and open one little box with a toy in it because they have it taped so tight with so many twist ties things on it and the cardboard itself won't rip or cut no matter how much you struggle with it lol . You are not alone in this , as I often complain about this when I try to open something lol . I try to leave the job to my husband as it is less of a hassle for him . I saw a commercial on t.v that showed some kind of cutter that was supposed to help you cut through and seriousley considerd buying it just to open packages :)

hi pyewacket oh those blasted packages inside the cereal box that wont come open at the seams. I took a pairing knife to it and instead of ripping it open the knife slipped and ripped a hole in the web between thumb and forefinger.so got out the trusty scissors and whacked it open dripping blood all over as I did so. then a band aid. and book packages from doubleday book club, almost impossible to open save with a cleaver or a saw perhaps.this reminded me of the scenein the Sundance Kid where the two idiots blew up the safe and the money was blown all over and most of it into smithereens. lol. great scene.

Yes those inside packaging for cereals are the pits...I now know not to try and rip it apart but take out the scissors and cut the top. That must have smarted when you jabbed that knife in the web between your thumb and forefinger...ouch!
