Getting rid of old habits and learning new.

Whenever we make the effort to free ourselves of an addiction or a habit we no longer want, we are often surprised to find ourselves missing the old pattern as we would a familiar friend. This feels strange at first, because we think we should instinctively move towards that which is good for us. And yet, it makes a lot of sense when you consider that we humans are creatures of habit. This is why we tend to lean towards people and places—and patterns of behavior--that make us feel comfortable. Therefore, many of the habits we form are not conscious and are based instead on learned behavior from role models who were not always making the healthiest decisions. A lot of addictions begin as a way of avoiding feelings that are very uncomfortable, so it makes sense that stopping the addiction means, for a time, a fair amount of discomfort. The same is true of habits that we have developed over time. Just knowing that it is going to be hard, and having compassion for ourselves as we work through the process, can help us make it when we feel the urge to give up. It’s also helpful to remember that in time we will develop new and healthier patterns, and the longing for the old ones will disappear. Eventually, we will automatically reach for things that are good for us, and the longing for positive change will help to form new habits, that are more in line with our present thinking. The only way to get to this new place is to endure a time of difficulty, which is a challenge we can confidently handle, if we remember that it will lead to the change we seek in our lives. Our bodies, hearts, and minds always need time to adjust to a new way of doing things, but they will adapt, and even become our allies, if we learn not to quit. We all have habits that we would like to be rid of, this may be a good time to work on it.

It's always difficult to change habits. That explains why, compared to a new worker, it's actually more difficult to teach a more experienced worker new things. The more experienced worker has already become accustomed to the old system of working. If we were to ask him to change and learn new habits, he would find it very difficult as he would need to unlearn what he knew and adopt new practices. This applies to Life too. We tend to operate within our comfort zone and find it difficult to accept ideas or habits that are not within it. I agree with you that we must learn never to quit and we must also learn to be open-minded towards new ideas and habits.

I have the bad habit of giving advice ,and I have to learn that some people don't take advice in a very positive way. My dad was a conservative who loved giving advice to family and friends ,and I think that I inherited his bad habit.

Hi Mirita, I've had the same problem, now I try to wait until someone asks. I'm not sure why I would think I should give advice anyway. Thanks for responding. Blessings.

Right now I've made it a goal to get rid of my old bad eating habits and replace them with better choices. I'm doing really good so far so hopefully once I get used to the good habits I won't be tempted by the bad. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Hi Pose123! That is so very true! We all have good and bad habits, whether we have consciously or unconsciously develop it, we still have to find ways to make a change and strive to be better for the sake of our own selves. The problem always lies on how to face and accept that we need to change and have the courage and strength to take the first step on that change. I am the type of person who when I made up my mind to do so, I will despite of the struggles and difficulties that I will face and sometimes, I do wish I would quit and just go on with my life. I admit that there are times that I succeed and there are times that I don't. But I am proud of myself in changing so much from a cry baby, a spoiled daughter and someone who can't fight her own battles to a much better individual. I would really like to think that I am aging gracefully. haha..However, I know there are still some bad habits that needed to be addressed within me and I am praying that I will have the strength, the courage and the will to do the change. Take care always..God Bless!
