Have You Ever Been Truly Scared?

I'm not talking about being startled like being surprised; I mean really afraid, such as the kind of ominous feeling you get when you are afraid something is going to happen to you. Once my wife and I were coming home from a movie. We lived in a rented home located out in the country. This home was actually an old farmhouse and naturally it stood all alone on about 10 acres of land. There was no one around for a couple of miles. As we approached our front door to unlock it (with a baby in tow) we heard a sound that shook us both to the core. It sounded like some very heavy breathing with some serious asthmatic sounds mixed in. This sound was much larger than what would come from a human being, and furthermore, it sounded like it was coming from a culvert pipe about 20 feet from the front porch where we were standing. Of course, we immediately went in the house. But it didn't stop there. We could hear it from inside the house. It was so unnerving that we packed up the baby and left. We were gone for about 2 hours and decided to face whatever it was now that we'd gotten our wits together again. When we got back, the sound was gone and never returned. To this day we never knew what it was. Well, that's my story. Let's read yours.

you know, that really is an awesome experience you have.. i have my scary experience too.. but its not like the things you are experiencing such as ghosts, monsters and some stuff.. i do have that kind of experiences especially in every campings we are doing.. the thing that scares me most and it surely pierced through my heart was the thing that my beloved ones were in danger.. from my family members to my wife to be.. ever since i was born.. i use to get scared from things that is around me.. dogs, dark places and etc.. and im sure you would agree to this... nothing is more frightening than losing your loved ones in such un awkward time and incident.. thats the thing that scares me the most.. and you, yourself could prove that..

You are right and that is another kind of fear. Sometimes that can be very bad too. You tend to feel what your loved ones feel. Thanks for the response.

i had truly been scared. it happened months ago when my father left me one night. i was simply at loss and did not know what to do. he just departed without saying any good byes. i am just 17. how am i suppose to face it? how am i suppose to do? with my terrible sense of loss, i was truly afraid for the first time. what was going to happen to me? what am i suppose to do? till this day, i can still feel the feeling of loss in my mind.

Did he leave permanently, or did it scare you that he left without saying a word? I can understand how you felt. Thanks for sharing that.

that would have scared the living daylight out of me. The scariest thing for me will be the unknown. If I know what it is, at least I know what will happen and how to face it. But if I have no idea what it is I won't know how to react. Reading about your encounter reminds me of one of my own. I was living alone then. In fact it was my first week sleeping in a place all by myself. When I was about to fall sleep, I heard scratching sound of my balcony door. I was living in an almost empty apartment block so I had no neighbours. Also I'm on the tenth floor so my balcony cannot be accessed by anyone. It was really scary as the scratching was very persistant. I didn't dare to do anything except cover myself with my blanket and force myself to sleep. I never want to go through that again. :(

That was interesting. I know that must have been scary, but weren't you curious about what was making the sound? Could it have been a bird? I would have done just what you did, but the next day I would have looked for clues as to what made the scratching sound. Great story, Thanks.

well the story didn't end there. On the same day of the following week the sctraching sound moved into the living room. It sounded just like a woman sctraching the wall with her long nails. I was very sure that all doors and windows are secured. When I checked the following they were still locked. It was enough to convince me that not checking it out is a correct choice. ;)

Once I was returning home at midnight. I had to cross a tree which is rumored to have ghosts on it. When I reached there I suddenly heard some noice and when I looked up I found the branches to be shaking rigorously. I kinda got scared and ran all the way to home. For the next few days I did not even take that route. But as I think about it now, I cannot stop laughing. It just me be some animal moving over the branches.hehehe

I had mine just 2 weeks ago actually. I was visiting my grandparents at their house and they had to run out to do a quick errand. Their house is shaped like a big U just to let you know. It was in the afternoon, broad daylight. I took a shower in the guest bath, and went to my grandparent's bathroom to put on make up. While I was doing this I heard shuffling and noises on the other side of the house, and I thought they were back. So I thought nothing of it and went back to my make up. When they didn't come into their room for a while and I didn't hear their voices in the house I got a little anxious. After I was done putting on my makeup I went back to the other side of the house, to the living room and then i heard the same noises coming from my grandparents bedroom, like whoever was there had moved now. Then I heard the house security system beeping, and I went to check it and the "trouble" light was on. I was so scared, but trying to be brave I walked toward the bedroom with my heart ready to leap out of my chest at any moment, with the turn of every corner. I got to her closet, and the door was shut, the perfect place for someone to hide. I gathered up all my courage and turned the handle, but it was locked. I don't ever remember my grandmother locking her closet door, especially since only her and my grandfather live there. Terrified, I ran back to the other side of the house and just sat on the couch until my grandparents arrived 10 minutes later. And I told them about it was they thought it was funny. Turns out there was no one there and nothing was wrong. I've never been so scared in my life.

Thanks for that great and scary story. Some things will just have to remain unexplained I guess. But that doesn't make it any less scary though, does it? You write very well and I could almost feel the fear that you felt; especially when you described how your heart felt each time you turned a corner. Very well done.

Thanks for the great story, orochi. 8 years is pretty young to be left alone like that. And your Dad's comments about being a wimp were not called for. I'm glad everything is alright today. But that is something you will never forget.

The last time I was really scared was when my daughter was born. The birth was a bit rough and, when they got her out, she wasn't moving.

Can I assume everything was alright since you didn't mention what happened? For a mother I can imagine that it was a terrifying experience. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the response lingli. Being at home alone is not one of my fears but I can see where it would bother some people. especially if they grew up as an only child. Or maybe it could be the opposite. Maybe people who are part of large families might be scared if they are suddenly alone.

When I was 10 years old, my friend promised that we will play in the evening at 8 P.M. because we both had to do some assignments and complete our homework. The place where we used to play was not that far from both of our homes. As my friend was also my neighbor. I went to the place we used to play and started waiting for him but he never showed up. The evening almost turning into night darkness at 8 P.M. The wind wasn't blowing and from a distance of about two blocks I saw a woman all dressed in black, she was wearing like a black gown till her toes and her hair long till her knees moving in air, while I was not feeling any air blowing. At the first glance of her, I hardly could see her face, I was terrified and shocked. I still can't forget the mixed feeling in me of scared, terrified and I was also thinking who she is. I felt her moving towards me a little, I forgot my friend and started running towards my home without looking behind. I stopped at my door ringing bell again and again. My parents and brothers were worried what happened. I told them the whole story and then I wasn't allowed to go out of house in and after evenings.

That was a really horrifying experience. Once, I was also really scared. It was when I was awake till 4 a.m. At about 3:30 A.M., I heard a sound as if someone was climbing the stairs, as I live on the first floor, I thought it was my mother. So I didn't gave it a notice. But it was 3:45 now and my mother was still not here, and I was continuously hearing those sounds, sounds of steps climbing the stairs. I ignored it and just glared at my PC, hoping that it might wash away those eerie thoughts from me. It was working, but suddenly I heard a large "Bamm!" on the roof. Now I was really scared. I took the steel pole of the vacuum cleaner (it was the only choice) in my hands and stood still, as I was expecting a visitor. Awaking someone would have been a childish thing at this point. I heard someone whistle on the roof. Now my mind somehow started working. It was like someone had climbed all the way to the roof and was inviting someone with whistles. I went to the staircase, with all my strength instilled in the steel pipe I was holding. When I reached the door to the roof, I found that it was locked. So nobody could have been there. I quickly went down at 4:00 A.M. and slept. This incident ruined my overnight plans. The happenings of that night still remain a mystery. Scary! AJ Rox.

hi singout yes I was scared a month ago when a odd looking young man who could not stand still came to my door selling magazines for he claimed his high school to get to go on a trip. this so called high school guy had to have been thirty and had needle tracts on his arms. okay he asked for a glass of water and wanted to come in no way. I got a paper cup and got him some water and picked up my sons baseball bat. he drank the water, made some inane remark about my pile of newspapers, tried to enter my house, and I said, you had best leave, I just c alled the sheriff and started to swing my baseball bat. he dropped the cup, leaped over the fence and was off. I locked the door, sat down and just shook. I was alone as my son was working nights, so when He came home and saw how upset i was he asked me what had happened. when I said I lied about calling the sherriff he said I should really have called the sherriff. we live over the city line in rural Tustin so have to call the sherrif for criminal stuff. well all was well that ended well. lol.

Yep, I have been truly scared. (Did you think for one second that I WOULDN'T have a story? LOL) I mentioned this story in another discussion about ghosts awhile ago. It really happened! I was about 15 or 16 years old and living in the house where I grew up, which was almost 100 years old at that time. Nothing unusual had ever happened, except maybe the time my friends and I had a seance in the basement (dirt basement) and we all saw two glowing eyes in a dark corner. But this isn't about THAT time... this was scarier. I was standing at the foot of my bed one day. I believe I was straightening out the covers, when I 'felt' something on my ankle. It was more of a mental thing than a physical thing. When I looked down, I saw what appeared to be a hand, only foggy and indistinct, wrapped around my ankle and it was coming out from under the bed. I shrieked so loud I'm sure I shattered window panes and a few ear drums a block over, then created a sonic boom when I broke the sound barrier getting out of that house! My mother came frantically running outside after me and asking me what was wrong. I'm sure she thought I had cut off an arm or something. I told her what had happened and, of course, she didn't believe me, so we went up to my bedroom where she looked under the bed, behind the bed, in my closet, everywhere. I stood near the door, not breathing and with my heart pounding; I wasn't going in any farther than that! She saw nothing. But, later that evening, she DID see something! We were in the living room watching TV and it floated past the doorway in the dining room. Okay, now SHE was scared! I felt vindicated, although I'd rather have thought I was losing my mind. This story goes on for awhile, but I won't go into further detail here since this is a topic about being scared, not living with ghosts.

Wow! Thanks for that great story! You and my wife ought to trade stories, She has some real "dillies" to tell also. Anyway, when you told about that hand coming from under the bed and holding your ankle, I got cold chills up and down my spine. It took me way back to my childhood and all the times I could swear there was something horrible under my bed. Well, we've told enough Ghost stories for one night. I may not get to sleep tonight. Thanks a lot. Goodnight.

I know what you mean. Have you ever awakened in the night and can't remember where you are? That happens to me sometimes when I have traveled somewhere away from home and slept in a bed other than my own. Sometimes it takes me a few minutes to orient myself as to where I am. That too is very scary.

Thanks for story cottonm. Was your friend just joking with you or was he serious? If it was just a joke, it was in poor taste. If he was serious, then I wouldn't blame you for leaving. I would have left (and did) too.
