Was just wondering if mine was the only one, I answered a topic on kids sticking things up their nose which brought me to this one. In my case I have had 2 do it. My first one was the same child that stuck something up his nose. In this case he swallowed, yes swallowed a small screwdriver! When he came to me and told me we were both scared to death! I called the doctor and he said mother nature almost always takes care of it. I had to check each time to see if it passed and it did! Not a nice job but I was so relieved! My now 20 month old is the next one that scared me to death. Hubby was in the habit of throwing change into my purse and she had gotten into it and started choking, I was so scared, finally got her so she was alright and yeah I yelled at him too (he never did it again) but for like 2 days she didnt seem to go the bathroom well, very little each time. So we called the doctors and they gave her an X-ray and it showed nothing, so somehow she passed it without us knowing. Still so scary. Do did your child/children ever make you go gray this way?

my daughter, when she was i think 7 months old, loves to pick up things on the floor and put it on her mouth, as any baby would do. one time i saw her picked up a black object about a marble in size, but when she put it on her mouth, she immediately pushed it out of her mouth and scratched her tongue as if she had eaten a hot pepper:-) when i checked it out, it's her poop that i missed cleaning up. her poop that time is hard like stone pellets. but i was glad that she did not get sick after that.

No, but my children have been known to stick things in their ears. Once my son had a bunch of those Styrofoam beans from a bean bag chair in his ear!

My son hasn't swallowed anything (yet) that he isn't supposed to. I thought he did one time though. We were over at my mom's house and my mom had bought him this necklace that had santa claus's face on it and when you put the two sides together the face lit up. I told her she shouldn't have bought that for him because it had two small batteries on it that made it light up. Well, we were over at her house and my son brought the necklace to me and I saw the two batteries were gone. My mom and I both started freaking out and she said she felt so bad for buying him that necklace. I called the doctor and they put me through to poison control and everything. I was so scared. The poison control told me to keep watching him and see if it came out in his poop. But when we got back home that night it was laying on our porch. I saw something shining from the porch light and when I looked it was the two batteries (they were like watch batteries) and I felt so relieved. From then on my mom has not bought anything like that for him again. LOL

It is scary when the swallow things and I cant imagine thinking that a battery was swallowed. Im so glad that you found them, had to be a total relief. Bet your mom felt really bad too. Grandbabies are so special that to think that you could cause harm to them would be devastating! Thanks for the comment.

My son was 2 1/2 years old, he was jelagged and did not sleep well that night. As I was sleeping next to him, he kept playing with my ears and in the process pulled out my earring and put it into his mouth and unforunately it got swallowed. He woke me up and said, "Mummy, I eat your earring" (still remember those words). We rushed him to the hospital immediately. The x-ray report showed it was stuck in his throat. He was given anathesia and the ring was safely removed.

That had to be scary to find that it was stuck in his throat, Im so glad that they found it and that it got removed. Better yet that he had told you or you might have just thought you lost it somewhere. Thanks for commenting.

One of my kids swallowed a penny once and was fine...no choking or anything. And the next day there it was. I am sure there have been other things that my kids have eaten that I don't know about and probably don't want to know.

I was actually thinking about that reading these responses. Just thinking about all the times we have caught the kids swallowing things, how many times have we not caught them. Noone can be with their child 24-7 and when you have kids it seems they just find everthing! Thanks for the comment.

oh good lord! a Screwdriver??? wow....yeah I think I would cry and just get panicky. Hrm, well none of my little guys (kids I babysit) swallowed anything, BUT when I myself had to go get an x ray, there was a little boy who had swallowed some coins as well. He thought of it as an adventure, and almost ate some more after he came out, his father was speaking to the nurse, and as children end up doing, get bored and reach in mom or dad's pocket, and OH! Dad has some change! Luckily the father saw what he was going at and said, "WHOA! Nope, don't think so!"

One of my sons swallowed a penny. From what I recall (it was over twenty-five years ago) we went to the doctor and he told us to wait for a while and it would all come out from the rear. Now my memory was a bit fuzzy, and I might have gotten it confused with my brother who also swallowed a penny or was it a dime, only that time I was a little girl, and mom was very excited, and I had been turning around on the piano stool at that time. I was scared though because well my younger son had had an operation on his aortic arch and we had to be careful about him chocking.

Luckily not yet. lol And hope never! I am afraid they got sick or die if they swallow things that are not supposed to be swallowed. I am careful in keeping things especially those that are sharp or dangerous for kids.

I think most kids at sometime in their life does no matter what we do. Like even when my son was around 6 and swallowed the little screwdriver, he knew it wasnt something that you place in your mouth. We have had to rearrange alot of things for our 20 month old.

Well one of my children actually swallowed a penny without us knowing he had done so. I only knew about it when I changed his nappy and it was just there, in the middle of it! I have had one stick something up his nose, we did not know he had until he developed this smell, it was vile and he ended up being off school for over 3 weeks because I would not send him because his nose stunk and I did not want him being picked on. The doctor kept treating him for an infection and eventually I pushed for a second opinion, good job I did, he had a 2 inch piece of black foam stuck up there. As soon as it was removed the stench went.

My 20 month old daughter is now getting into the habit of putting small objects into her mouth such as a bottle cap and a small rubber ball. It scares me when she seems like she was going to choke or something. I have to keep them away from her reach. She did not use to do that. I remembered watching one of those funny home videos on TV. One dad actually took a metal detector to identify a coin which one of her daughters had swallowed. On the first day, the detector beeped when the dad runs it over her tummy. The next day, it beeped when it ran over her butt areas. The next scene showed that there was no more beeping from the metal detector, which means that it has been discharged from the body. SO funny, I thought

That is very funny, wish I would have seen the show. Kids seem to just have the habit of putting everything in their mouths, nose and ears from what I have been reading here! Glad I no longer have to think my child/children are the only ones. Weird thou the age spread here is my youngest is 20 months and I had 7 kids before the youngest of that group being 13 and other then the screwdriver none of my other kids every swallowed a thing. The screwdriver being an accident as he was around 6 and said it was. Thanks for commenting.

My son who is now 4 used to eat paper which was bad but not as bad as his favorite thing to eat. Dryer Lint. He would go open the dryer and eat the lint. He did that for a good 6 months or more. Then one day he stopped. He still puts EVERYTHING in his mouth tho.

Well, hopefully that kind of accident shall never happen to my daughter. My wife is good enough to keep small things and food like objects out of her reach. My brother was swallowing several small glass ball he got them from aquarium when he was 3 years old... they out when he pup. Thats the last time such accident happen in my family. Make our house child proof and nice place all the time are our obligation as a parent, but accident happen.

I think most people are good enough but accidents do happen and when you have many feet running around and a full house things do happen. Our doctor says that is one of the number 1 thing that hospitals and doctors gets calls on so I guess it is very common. I think it was so much easier with one kid, then again I think it does depend on the kid. I have known some people that never clean and their child has never done it. I think it is cause in a clean place that one thing can catch a childs attention and they make a beeline for it as they arent used to seeing things on the floor. Thanks for commenting

Yes it is very scary and I think all parents do all they can to make sure their babies are safe. I think it is cause they grab such little things that sometimes we dont notice or the fact that you cant be with them 24-7 as much as we would like to be. Thanks for commenting.

The other night my daughter must have gotten a hold of one of my fiances screws from his tool kit. All of a sudden I saw her choking, and of course paniced and hurry up and got the thing out of her mouth. It wasn't until we got it out that we realized it was a scew. Thank God she didn't swallow it. Now I've made extra sure that all tools, and such are put way up. I don't want to have that again.

I know it is soooo scary isnt it and no matter how careful you are sometimes things are just missed. It is hard to when you have other kids in the house, they dont always stop to think about what a hazard things can be. Im so glad that she is alright!

My son is 15 months old now and has the habit of putting things into his mouth. And that is the reason why i dont let anything small lying around at his level of reach. I am like a scared wet cat! I am very sacred of loosing my son, so i take utmost care that nothing happens to him. I know, all parents are cautious about their children swallowing things and something happening to them but sometimes things like that do happen. I am particularly very scared of kids choking, i am glad that your daughter is safe. Thank God, that both your kids are safe and may God keep them safe at all times.

I think another thing is as they get a little older they are soooo curious. Our trouble was when our 20 month old was starting to crawl and get around and now we have our other granddaughter that is crawling. I think this time the older kids realized it can be a danger and have gotten a little better at picking up the small stuff which is a great help. Thanks for commenting.

babies - a toddler eating
Hi there! I don't have a kid but yup! - I did once swallowed a coin when I was about 2 yrs.old. I was trying to mimic what my dad was doing with magic tricks using coins. Like he would make the coin disappear by swallowing it and make it appear again getting the coin from the back of my ears. When they weren't around I decided to try it with my playmate and end up really swallowing the coin. Of course they panicked and the doctor says they'll see it my poop. And they did hehe. Parents should really need to be watchful when it comes to toddlers because I think kids are really like that. Because of their curiousity they tend to swallow things. Even the babies always likes putting things into their mouths whatever their hands can get a grab. That's why the elders say that devils are afraid of kids because they might get eaten. Ciao!

I have never heard of that saying about the elders, but it could be true in some cases .. LOL! It is true they will grab anything and try to eat it! They explore not just but look but touch and then taste it seems!

Kids seem really attracted to coins, wonder why? Maybe cause they are shiny or just small enough to fit in their hands I dont know. All we can do is our best to keep things out of their way I guess.
