Curious George Here

I just responded to a discussion that asked if you judged people because of their poor grammar. My response was, I want to correct it , but I don't judge that person on the basis of bad grammar. There are people from all over the world using this site. Some use the English language very well, some want to learn, and make a great effort to do so. I admire that. This discussion got me wondering. If English is not your first language, do you want someone to correct your grammar, or would you be offended?

English is my first language Bohemian and the only one that I can write in. If someone wants to correct my grammar then I shan't make a fuss provided that it is done in a good and constructive way. I'd never dream of correcting someone else's unless they asked me to or I really did not understand what they had written. I have responded at times "I think what you are saying is....." or "Thank you" when I have no comprehension at all.

Sometimes, I just want to say, HUH? But, really, if someone is trying to improve their use of English, should we not give them a little boost in the right direction? Of course, in a polite way. I would never be rude about it.

Provided that we don't patronise them. I try to help Americans all the time of course!! But a little help is fine, but a critique of their complete discussion may be a tad excessive.

I think it is silly to judge a person on their grammar, but if they wanted to ask me to help them, I would, There are more things to judge people on, more serious things to be worrying about getting your adverbs and adjectives mixed up and writing its when it should be it's. Besides if a person whose English is in the learning stage, sees how the others write, then they will soon catch on. So if someone who does not know English want to know, they could just ask and someone will help him or her.

It does seem rather silly. I mean when I am in a hurry, I make mistakes, so if I am bound to why should I get upset if someone who was born in some non-English making country make an error. Besides I never went to University so how can I tell someone who did in another country that he made a mistake.

My first language is English but I wouldn't say it's perfect. I do make mistakes sometimes so I would feel happy if the person corrects my grammar in a polite way. In this way, I learn. If it was done in a rude or condescending manner, I will definitely feel offended.

Thanks, poohgal. I don't mind a little constructive criticism, and correction when it is needed. I want to know when I make a mistake. Makes me a little more aware of what I am doing, or saying the next time.

Hi thebohenmianheart, I wouldn't corredt because they might get offended and its not plesant when someone do that to you, they are doing very well. I wonder if all the people whose first language is English would they be able to write in other languages? Tamara

I certainly would not know how to write in any other language. And, I hope you are not offended at the question. I would not do anything to intentionally offend anyone. I was just curious. And, I agree, most are doing very well.

Hi thebohenmianheart, Ofcouse I'm not offended, I'm from the U.K and my fingers seems to work before my brains or is it the other way round as there so many mistakes in my spelling and feel sorry for anyone who is trying to understand what I'm writing about, so I do understand what you are saying and I'm not offended. Well, I have had a problem with my brain getting a little ahead of my fingers today. As you can see by some of my posts. Everybody makes mistakes.

interesting topic ! i belong to a global friendship site. like myLot, we have members from all over the world. i wouldn't just jump in a correct them in public. i might shoot them an e-mail if i sense a problem with how someone could misinterpret theis comment. heck, i make gramatical mistakes and spelling mistakes because i type faster than i think !

*L* I know what you mean. I have to read and re-read my posts most days. I leave things out, drop letters, etc. I don't think I would correct someone in public. But, if it did not hurt their feelings, I would send them a private message, just to let them know.

I don't judge people for poor grammar. One of the things is people are trying to learn English and it is not the easiest language to learn. Another thing is who am I to judge someone else. My grammar is not the best that it could be and English is my language.

There is not very much doubt about it. As languages go, English is probably the one that has evoked the most comment, criticism and controversy. It may be validly said that with a second language, no one really expects the proficiency that is demanded of a first language, but there is no reason why your best should not be done. Like many members here where English is spoken as a second language, there are obviously many glaring examples of incorrect grammar seen all the time. Mistakes need to be corrected, and correct word usage demonstrated by those who are very proficient in this language. When comes to learning a language especially English I am forever eager to learn from those who are from English speaking world. I am not offended if you correct my grammar but am really put off if you judge me by my grammartical mistakes.

Very well stated, zandi. Thank you. I know that American English is confusing and messed up, and I say that as an American. I have seen examples that are used when teaching people the language, like three spellings of the word to, tough and bough and how different they sound, etc. It amazes me that people can learn the language at all.

Normally, i wun feel offended if others wanna correct my grammer, because i know most of my grammers are wrong, and i'm only using them in my own way, instead of the standard usual way ^_^ hehe But when i spot a grammer mistake, i wun correct them, as some may be self conscious or, think that they are always right and never wrong ^_^ SO unless one ask, if not i wun correct for them ^_^

I am often tempted to correct people's grammar but I manage to restrain myself. I am never sure if it is helping the person or insulting them so I do nothing. There are many people on mylot who do not have English as a first language and I think they do quite well considering. I doubt I would be as good with their language. It is hard to know if someone would be offended or not. If it was my grammar that was bad I would want it corrected because I would want to learn the language better but if that was the case I would mention it in my post or ask for help. The written language is much harder to learn than the spoken. But to just correct someone who did not ask for help. In that situation I think you could risk offending someone.

I am the same way. I want to correct the mistake, but I don't. I don't want to offend anyone, or discourage them from learning. If I were trying to learn another language, I know I would want someone to tell me if I made a mistake. I tried to learn French, one time. They guy that was helping me laughed at me all the time. It didn't bother me, once he showed me the difference in what I said and what I meant. I even learned to laugh at myself that way.

not sure if I should respond as I am an American but maybe as mylot users we should ask those two questions to our mylot friends to whom Enlish is not their native tongue, in order to help them with their struggles, not in a patronizing way but in a genuinely helpful way.

I have seen posts stating that the person wants to learn English, and that is why they are here. In those cases, I don't think I would have a problem correcting someone. Of course, I would be polite about it.

I wouldn't be offended but I won't spend much time reading it unless it was of particluar interest to me. Its not intolerance, its just that there's so much more and better reading to do and I'm not really into teaching. Although I would help with advice if I detected the person was likeable.

Ok, but, we are not judging others for their grammar. I just wanted to know if people wanted to be corrected when they use bad grammar. If I can understand the point someone is trying to make, I don't care.
