Is the teacher in you doing a decent job?

Who are we - that is what we teach... - Who am I?

We all know that life is a journey where we never cease to learn. It's an ongoing process of discovering and rediscovering, learning and re learning. But there is also the other side to it. The teacher in us are in a constant endeavor teaching others. Sometimes consciously and most of the times sub consciously. People specially children pick up things very quickly and we must be very careful about what we do and how we do it and most importantly WHO ARE WE.This WHO ARE WE is the root of everything and we must realise it first and fore most and then go about letting others perceive it. Today is Teacher's Day in India Today, September 5th, the Birthday of Dr. S Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, is celebrated as Teacher's Day. A great philosopher, a true statesman, and a renowned scholar Dr. Radhakrishnan epitomized all the qualities of head and heart which a teacher should have. "We have learnt to fly in the skies, we have learnt to race in the waters, but alas we have not yet learnt to walk on the earth."

Who are we ? Yes, that is the big question indeed. It's only when we are on the path of this self realisation, that we truly understand the nature of our experiences, the rights and the wrongs. As you have rightly put it, we are always in some form endeavouring to teach others, but many a time they are biased by our views and understanding. It's only when the self realisation dawns upon us that we truly get into the mode of sharing and teaching. I have been through my experiences of teaching children in the past, but I had always looked upon it from the academic perspective. I did find it enjoyable then. On looking back today, it seems so incomplete, simply because I feel that there is so much more that i can share and teach today. I am much more cautious and try to get the right values learnt from my experiences across today. Thanks Mimpi, for sharing these extremely meaningful words on this special occassion of teacher's day. My thoughts, prayers and good wishes go out to all my teachers, academic and otherwise from whom i have learnt so much today.

Thanks for enriching this discussion, as always. This self-realisation is a great thing which points to our follies outright and make us a better human in the process. Teaching is a beautiful thing and we end up helping ourselves more than anyone else. My aim, however, is to make people conscious of their rights and aspirations. They should have the belief in their convictions and know what their priorities in life should be. Thanks.

teacher - Teachers' Day in China is September 10th every year. I love to work as a teacher.
Hello dear mimpi. I have no idea how many of us mylotters are engaged in the career of teaching, but I would still be very happy to think that every one of us is working as a teacher to some extent so long as he or she is passing on some very useful knowledge or information to the others. Based on this concept of mine, I would be glad to say Happy Teachers' Day to you all. We have a saying in China that the most glorious job on the earth is to work as a teacher. Of course, it is used to describe the importance of a teacher's job as a teacher is responsible for the passing of knowledge to the pupils to make them aware more of the world to form their philosophy of the world. Teachers are like the moon at night, lighting the way for people to move on without any blocks. Teachers have been respected and compared to many positive aspects. As a teacher, the most important thing is to teach his students the way how to study, not just passing knowledge. With the self-study ability gained from his teachers, the student is able to go on with his own study all life long. By the way, our Teachers' Day in China is September 10th every year. Thank you so much for the topic, dear mimpi.

Hi William Firstly I am sorry for not being able to leave comment. I have always looked up to you as a teacher and as a human and when I started this discussion it was largely a tribute to teachers like you. The 'self-study' as you have mentioned is very important and I couldn't agree more with you. The process of realising our worth gets better when under the guidance of true teachers and we evolve as humans. Thanks so much. Wishing you all a very Happy Teacher's Day as well.

"The process of realizing our worth gets better when under the guidance of true teachers and we evolve as humans." Yeah, I agree with you on this point, as it makes one easier to master what he is learning if he is able to have a real teacher guide him in the process of learning. Thank you for the comment, mimpi.

The importance of a teacher and teaching will always remain very high. It is said that a 'Teacher' is next to God. There is an old peom of an Indian Saint Kabirdas which says that if you happen to face your 'teacher' and 'your parents' simultaneously, whom would you give preference. It is further said that - we must bow our head to the teacher and touch his feat, as it is he, who has made us a 'man'. You are right, we as 'teacher' needs to be very careful, while imparting education to our wards. We should preech, what we can pratice. I always try my best to inculcate good manners in my wards and always tell them that what is the importance of a 'nice and honest' person in life. We keep on trying teaching our children good realities of life, not knowing exactly, how much do they actually 'receive' it and later on follow those ideas in their lifes. Good Post!

Even though I am a mother now, I still think I am a student of life too. I try to learn something new everyday and grow the knowledge of the world I have to better understand it. The day we stop learning is the day we stop living, because we stop growing as a person. Now that I have children, I am doing my best to teach them about life, but I find, I am learning just as much about life from them as I am teaching them. Personal growth can only be achieved through learning. The teacher/student cycle that stimulates our brains can also stave of dementia related illness later in life.

Dear This is so well said! Teacher and students complement each other and the whole learning experience is an enriching one. we all learn through our life time and impart those knowingly and unknowingly. Learning makes us who we are and we teach who we are. Thanks.

Hi Mimipi, Late response I am sorry but it was also my daughters birthday on the 5th and we got a new puppy on the weekend so been rather busy. How tru these words are as we have still yet to discover so many things about us and around us. I try to lead by example to my children but we are all human and all err in some way at times. I like to think that I am still teachable though and agree we never cease to learn. Huggles. Ellie :D
