What do you believe will happen on December 12, 2012?

Will the world see its final days and come to a cataclysmic end? Will an amazing celestial event occur? ...or... Will spirit and matter join together, and become as one? According to the accient Mayan calander, "something" definite WILL occur upon this future date. What do YOU suppose that "something" may be? cdrxo

My father (if he's still alive then - unfortunately he is very ill) will become 84. 12th of December is his birthday, but there's no way ancient Mayans could know it! Perhaps it helps us a bit forward if we could find out somehow what happened on 12.08.3113BC, when Mayan calendar began? For scientists who are working on historical astronomy it shouldn't be an impossible task. Unfortunately all that I know is, that approximately then ended the pro-dynastic period in ancient Egypt, the hieroglyphic script was developed, etc. So, are there historians and/or astronomers among myLotters? There is a question for you!

I'm afraid you've misunderstood me... of course, English isn't my native language and I guess it may cause such things sometimes. Of course, the Mayans couldn't know what happens 1928 or 1960, and that's exactly what I wanted to say! I'm not superstituous at all, in fact, I'm quite sceptical one. That's why I got this question. Everybody are telling about Mayan calendar ending at a certain day, some are even waiting for apocalypse or whatever. I personally do not believe in apocalypse. Well, Mayan calendar starts also on a certain day. Why? What happened then? What made them to pick this certain day to start their time counting? If we could know the answer, perhaps we could figure out, why they picked another certain day to end it. If not - all we have to do is to wait and see.

O.K., let me try to put it to you another way. Why does anybody pick "whatever day" to create or invent something? From what has been established, the Mayans were curious about certain things, just like we are. Time, has always been on mankind's minds. Questions of: Where did we come from? How long has man been here? How old is the earth? What might have been here before mankind? etc., etc. Knowing though that they had the ability to count, they could analyze sequences of PAST events. They were able to determine approximately WHEN plants and animals first appeared on earth. Quite an amazing feat, wouldn't you say? Then from there, they determind via past events, seasonal cycles, evidence of phenomina, and physical earth changes, when approximately, MAN first appeared. Believe it or not, by our standards today, they weren't "off" by very much. 0.00002 days in fact! Unbelievably fantastic! So, in answer to your question, someone in their group was more than likely ordered to develop a "time-system". Whatever "day" that happened on, is basically insignificant. Does this answer your question, or am I missing your point? cdrxo

I'm very sorry to hear that your father is ill, and I'm sure all we mylotters would only wish you and your family nothing but the best. However, I'm not too sure just exactly where you got the idea, that the Mayans ever knew your father for one thing, or that they even knew that his birthday would be December 12? That's like saying, they had some kind of "crystal ball" and knew that you'd be born in 1960? No. Try to stay with me here. This ancient culture that didn't even figure out how to use the wheel yet, was extremely intellient...far beyond that of ANY other civilization on the planet! These people were mapping astromatical and planetary events to know when to properly crow crops, calculate yearly time in terms of number of days, seasonal cycles, construct massive pyramids, know about masonry & brick working....in a sense what I'm say is that they were mathamatical geniouses. Were you aware that they were the first to use the number zero, 100's of years before the Egytians or the Romans even knew "what" a zero was? They were S I E N T I S T S. But as far as being "psychic"? I doubt it. A might superstitious? Hell yes! Despite their belief in sacrafices to the gods, they had a miraculous ability to forcasrt events, based on SCIENCE. Even hyroglyphics found at digging sites relvealed certain predictions of a futuristic first and second world war. All I'm saying here, is that they had an amazing technology....and NO MATTER WHEN the heck they developed a calander, is anybody's guess. The fact that they built a first one that we to this day now depend on, is enough for me. I AM an astronomer, and quite often refer to their mathematical texts. I just thought it was an interesting question to throw out there, is all. Cheers mate....and please...I mean nothing personal in ANY of my discussions. Have a good one. cdrxo

I have another question for you... What happens, if nothing happens?

If nothing happens the sun will die out or the earths inside and we have following possibilities. 1. We create som sort of heat and protection to protect ourself from the sun and have electricity wich will generate to a machine wich will give us heat. 2. we die. 3. i dunno another meteor will crash into another planet wich has a bacteria in it and then a new form of life will be there. thats what i guess.

time - clock and calender
It has the same probability as the probability of the world ending tomorrow. We don't know when the end will be. We can't even guess. So let's get on with our lives. If the world ends, the world ends. There's nothing we can do to stop it. But for the record, I think the world as we know it has a few million more years left.Or at least until the end of our lifetimes.

You are correct. Even "if" the world were going to end tomorrow...there's nothing we could do about it.

I always heard it was Dec. 21st but no matter, it's just another day. Various people have been saying the world is going to end for several thousand years and so far... well we're still here! Most of this stuff is made up anyway by people who want to make money on a book or just enjoy scaring the bejeebers out of their friends and starts the rumor mill. There is nothing on any of the Mayan calendars that actually says the world will end. That was just someone's interpretation. My "something" for any doomsday prophecy... nothing.

True. There IS nothing on the Mayan calander that actually "SAYS" the world will end... only that from what scientists have depicted from evidence, as well as have monitored themselves...is that an event WILL occur. I believe, it will be a good one!

I heard too many rumors to believe in catastrophe. Today I believe most of those events are being hped a lot by media creating insecurity in people.

I agree. The media is NOT the place to seek for this answer. But you are correct in that it does create quite a lot insecurity. What the problem is...is the not even the scientists know what "may" happen, they just seem certain that "something" will? What that is...no one knows.

No, I believe that it is coming soon as the Bible states. But remember God clearly states that no man will no the day and hour of his return so therefore we can not make precise predictions of when will be the end. But I will keep that date in mind to see if your right or the mayan calendar is right!

Thank you for that, but I was not really trying to bring religion into the question. You may have your faith, that's fine with me...I mean no disrespect. However, according to "scientific" evidence, changes in the heavens ARE taking place. This is NOT speculation, or hearsay, but clearly our planet is moving closer to the centre of our galaxy. It has been recorded (scientificly) that ever 250,000 years, something happens to the earth...like a cycle if you will. I believe we are due for that next "cycle", and THAT's what the Mayans were trying to PREPARE us for. As far as the END...no. Man will survive, as they have always done.
