pirated cd's, dvd's, imitations, and the like

In Manila, as in a lot of public places in the metropolis, pirated cd's and dvd's abound for sale. You name the title of the movie and you'll get. Very cheap cost too. However, you don't get clear copies all the time. I know a lot of people would rather buy such copies for less than go watch the movie on screen in moviehouses where you get to pay and spend some. There are also shopping malls where you could buy imitations of the more expensive branded ones of clotheswear, bags, shoes, and perfumes. Sometimes, the best imitations really look like the real original ones in make. Of course, the imitations cost very less. I myself have some of these kind. Anyway, I really don't mind buying such pirated cd's, dvd's and imitations. I believe that people have the right to make their own choice, especially if they have to consider the cost. What about you? Care for pirated cd's, dvd's and imitations?

The only reason they will care is if they find out. I remember that once someone made a prank call where he said he had to pay 500.000 danish krona and once he told him it was a prank call he lighten up because he didnt have to pay all that :D it was hillarious :D

Hi orochi! you must have meant that someone played a joke on someone just so he could scare the guy into paying some money for having bought or sold something "pirated" or an imitation. Thanks for the response!

I also live in the Philippines, and although I used to support piracy, in a way that I buy copied disk. I don't like it now and I hope the government would implement stricter ways to stop them. The reason is because although they are cheaper, we are not getting support from the big companies that made them. (Sony's PS3, Nintendo Wii and Micosoft Xbox comes to mind) therefore we get goods that are overpriced, unsupported features and in case there are problems we can only rely on small retail shops. As for imitations, whether they look alike or not... it is still an imitation! They can easily wear down and doesn't have the quality of what an original can give. I also dare you to openly show your imitation to a country who is strict against them... if they found out, you'll definitely have a trip to the police station.

Ouch! Well I am not campaigning that people buy imitations at all, nor did I say that their quality is quite as good as the originals. Its really a matter of choice. Anyway, thanks for the response!

I have to admit that even though this is not really the right thing to do, when I lived in Manila I used to buy a lot of these movies also. It was just so cheap and easy and there was every title imagineable. Some of them you could buy and they weren't even in the movie theatres yet! Quality was sometimes an issue though but most of the places selling them let you check them first. It is a multi billion dollar industry that will be around for a long, long time. Especially in Asia.

I also bought pirated CDs and DVDs before. But it was such a disappointment, very poor quality. So, I really think that it's time to stop this business. By the way, on some malls, original DVDs and CDs are on sale.

I know what you mean you just find anyhing that can be imitated in the philippines like cd's,DVD's,clothes and even mobile phones and other electronic devices as well, and so i wonder where do they make this things because you at lest got to have a factory to massively produce such imitations and sometimes with the perfect likeness as the real ones, and isnt it illegal to make reproduce copyrighted materials?hope that your satisfied with my response.have a nice day.

I'm so sorry for coming in so late. Sincerely speaking, most of the time I avoid pirated stuff. However, sometime, when I need something urgently and don't have enough money, I make compromises, but not often.

hi patchmypal I would never buy pirated stuff as my conscience would not let me. the people who made these original copies are being ripped off by all this pirating. If you buy this stuff you are cheating the people who made the originals, and thats really unfair you are using their works to make cheap poor quality cop;ies and thats just plain wrong I would never go there at all. it is just wrong.

Hello Hatley! I understand how most people like you, and especially the people behind the original works think about the "pirating" business. Its sad though that a large number of Filipino consumers can only spend so much for such things. Its really a problem that needs to be addressed, not only by the government but also of the industry here in the Philippines.

I cam from China, where I think we got a more serious priated thing then Manila. I also used pirated software and watching pirated movies. But I now get more to reject such pirated actions. Although I seem good for the individual who use this stuff, it is not good the the country. You know, pirated software has caused a lot of trouble to Chinese government. And there are a lot of good free software that we can use instead.

Hello Shanshuiii! Am sorry to say this but I hope you'll understand - you see, most people behind the pirated business here in the Philipines are the Filipino-Chinese business men. But they are not entirely to be blamed because as I've said in one of my comments that the problem needs to be addressed not only by the government but also of the business industry. Thanks for the response!

I'm sorry, but I disagree with you. People do have the right to make their own choices, but not when they harm people and their intellectual rights while they make their supposedly choices that they are entitled to. Let's give an example: a popular PC game. A PC game requires a whole team of developers, marketing people, programmers and the likes. An average of 5 years is needed just to build a PC game. People work hard to create a game for the masses and it is natural that they should be suitably rewarded for it. However, if you buy the pirated version of the game, they earn nothing for it. This is stealing, and unless you consider stealing ethical, then I would say you do not want to engage in piracy. What makes imitations so popular anyway? Branded goods are branded because they are exquisite in design or they have good quality. Imitations definitely do not boast of either. And when you go out in the streets full of imitation goods, people will know. Won't you feel embarrassed when someone spots that you have an imitation? I know I would. In a nutshell, piracy to me is stealing and should not be encouraged.

Hello! That's very true. I don't campaign for the fakes either. Its just that this problem has really gotten out of hand with all the stuff proliferating almost everywhere in Metro Manila. Anyway, I respect your view, but no I don't think I'd get embarassed if seen with an imitation. Thanks for the response!

Well, there's a saying that "if you can't beat them, join them". I suppose that's what is happening in the so-called "pirated" business. Thanks for the response.

I do have some pirated copies but i only get the latest and if i like the movie i go to the cinema to watch it in all it's regal glory and will buy the DVD when it comes out as i love my extra's! So i suppose it is like a tester to see if i like the real thing!
