Define/describe and Old Maid

In my country, when a woman is not yet married by age 30, she is labelled as an "old maid." A few years ago, by age 25, most unmarried women begin to panic. Some get teased by relatives, and matched by (mostly) their mothers to any guy available. When i turned 30, my mom was the one who seemed to panic. Relatives tell me that i will soon "exit off the calendar", meaning that after 31, my age won't belong to the numbers in the calendar. I was happy being single, even at 30 i felt like i was still 20. But people, old-fashioned way of thinking, labelled be "almost an old maid". I guess for me, a woman can be only 20 years old but is already an old maid. What is the real meaning of this word, really?

Hi Pinky, does this word still exist? I thought it's a term that's no longer fashionable. The only old maid I know, is the game of cards we used to play. Anyway, the term 'old maid' is used to describe a woman who has remained single beyond the conventional age for marrying (Answers.com). Nowadays, it is more politically correct to call them, single women. And it's fashionable to be single now; some people choose to remain single, though others would get married due to peer or society pressure!

In my country, the term is still used by the old folks, living in towns far from the urban world. Oh even in some metros, moms still use this words. I know it is now fashionable to be single, but oh it is so hard to make people understand that "old maid" is out, and "super single woman" is in.

Oh but old maids still exist i think. They are unmarried single women who live alone, they are angry and lonely and selfish, and they hate their neices and nephews. They are judgemental of people, and some are control freaks.
