Meditation from healing to magic

I'm reading a book by Christopher Penczach(I think I spelled that right) called the Witch's Shield. Its not really the book that I'm referring to in this discussion but his ideology of meditation. It seems to me that most of his workings are done strictly through meditation alone, meaning no ritual no tools.
I understand that these things are not necessary to accomplish ones goal but I was just curious as to your opinion of the uses of meditation... is it a cure all or just a over used form of magic (for lack of a better word sorry!).
Can one accomplish magical workings through meditation alone... or is it just a way to enter into your magical mind.
So far I have learned that through meditation you can clear your mind, become more focused on the magical realm, and focus your energies more clearly. I have done many cleansing meditations and grounding meditations but as far as spell casting while in meditation I've not heard of this till recently. Anyway thanks for all comments!

In Hinduism, they have an endless list of mantras (which technically is an active form of meditation) that can help you archive just about anything you can think of. Being a practitioner of both magic and mantras, I have to say that overall, mantras are simpler and more powerful then basic spellcraft (no, not D&D type...).
If you strip magic of its flashy moves, the core principles are that same as meditation. Relaxation, Focus, Will and Release. Most of the 'extras' are just tools to help you overcome your logical brain (i.e. the part that tells you how silly all this mambo jumbo is!)
Well, at less that's what I believe :) my 2 cents!
