May I Please Lick The Bowl?

My daughter loves to bake. Yesterday, she made a delicious chocolate chip banana cake, that she's made once before. We're going to a luncheon today, and we were asked to bring a dessert. I immediately thought of my daughter's cake, and was confident that she'd do the baking. She didn't let me down.
She was cleaning up the baking dishes afterward, and the bowl with yummy batter residue was sitting on the counter. She would've washed it this way, but instead, I 'licked' the bowl. I don't mean that I actually accomplished this with my tongue, as I did use a spoon.
So yummy, and something I almost never get to do these days.
This reminded me of my childhood, as wonderful memories of my mom's baking, came flooding back. The subject of this discussion, is what I'd always ask her. Of course the answer was yes, even though I had to share with my sister.
Do you have happy childhood memories such as this, especially those involving cooking or baking?
Do certain activities, aromas etc., bring about these memories?
Do your own family members ever ask, "May I Please Lick The Bowl?"
By the way, if anyone would like my daughter's cake recipe, PM me and I'll see that you receive it. Thanks.

No harm in licking the bowl with sweet residue. We all used to do it when we were kids and no pleasure is greater than licking be it a bowl, spoon or an icecream con. We should continue to indulge in those activities, which give joy to our senses and our joy and happiness is more important than anything else.
Keep enjoying!!

Hi dpk,
I think we should be able to enjoy this at any age too. Often the batter is even more tasty than whatever is actually being baked (I think). Thanks for sharing. Take care.

Hi! I remember those times with my Mom. She would make something...uhm...now that I think about it I cant remember what it was that she was cooking/baking or if she was cooking/baking back then. I just remember the potful of meringue that she makes. Id always hang around the table or the kitchen just trying to have a taste or swipe some spoonfuls of the stuff. Of course she knows what Im doing and she would tell me to stop or there wouldnt be any left!LOL! When she's done with everything I had the honors of 'licking' the pot. I sometimes used my fingers!
Its just so rich and it would be a shame to see good meringue go to waste. The ladle on the other hand I did 'lick' literally.
I remember those times whenever I see a Lady Finger cookies/biscuits cause I remember it would taste even better when dipped in my Mom's home made meringue.

Hi bjcyrix,
The meringue sounds delicious. Is it the same type that you'd put on a lemon pie? It's great that baking and cooking can trigger such wonderful childhood memories. Lady Fingers with meringue do sound really good. Thanks for your response.

No. The recipe doesn't call for any icing. This kind of cake reminds me of muffins, and would work just as well this way.

Could you email me the recipe? Would love to try it.
I never really got to lick the bowl until after I started going strong in cooking myself...my mother couldn't could a lick (no pun intended) neither could my grandmother...they were a cooking disaster, and never, ever made anything for baking like cakes and such. So it wasn't until I started going gungho with cooking and baking that I could indeed lick the bowl...say if I made cakes, muffins or cookies...and especially my "famous" Cranberry/Walnut Bread that I usually make at Christmas time---if you want that recipe let me know...

Hi pye,
I hope you enjoy the recipe. It really makes a nice moist cake. Thanks too, for sending me yours. Christmas would be a good time to try it. I'm sure my daughter will want to do some baking. That's really interesting about both your mother and grandmother, not being good cooks. My mom and her mom, were such wonderful cooks, and maybe this is due to our Pennsylvania Dutch background (actually Pennsylvania German). The cooking on my dad's side of the family, wasn't all that great though, as I remember it. Thanks so much for sharing here.

Okay, first of all, YUM!! How have I missed this discussion? Chocolate chip banaba cake?? I will PM you straight away.
I have many such memories of baking with my mom as a child. Also several memories of a next door neighbor who was like a mom to me. She was so much fun to bake with and always let me lick the bowl
.
Years ago when she received my wedding invitation she sat down to write me a card and mailed me pictures of our time together baking. The are very special pictures that bring tears to my eyes. I keep them at the back of my recipe box and look at them every holiday season when it is baking time for me again.
Ahhh, thanks for leading me on a stroll down memory lane, someonesmom. It is a perfect day for it for me. ((hugs))

Hi makingpots,
No worries about your missing this discussion. I do that sometimes too, and I'll come across a friend's topic that I 'just have' to respond to. The memories you've shared here of baking with your neighbour, have brought tears to my eyes. This has actually triggered off a childhood memory of my own, long forgotten. I think it's so special that she sent you those photos, after receiving your wedding invitation. Such a wonderful keepsake. It's great to take a stroll down memory lane, from time to time. Thanks so much for sharing here. Take care.

Most of us where raised on licking the beaters or licking the bowel or eating raw cooking dough and now they say raw eggs carry salmonella. Whats with that? Yes I have fond memories of eating more cookie dough than baking.

Hi teapotmom,
That's interesting about the salmonella. It seems that a lot of things "we were raised on," appear to be considered harmful today. I sometimes think 'the so called modern day experts,' get carried away with things. It seems like 'nothing' is good for us anymore. Eating cookie dough was the best. Thanks for your response. Take care.

I think we have used to many cleansers to get rid of all the bugs and germs that we have not let our bodies build up our immunities. That is one of my theories. I also know we now have super bugs from all the overuse of antibiotics.

Hi weemam,
Thanks for sharing the fun baking stories. It's too bad that all of the icing got scraped off the cake though, as that would be really frustrating. My mom's baking day used to be on Friday, and I have such wonderful memories of this. The aroma used to fill the house. Take care. xxx

I loved to 'lick the bowl' too, and would hang around the kitchen forever, just so I could do so. My mom used to make delicious pies, complete with homemade crust. She'd let me roll out a little bit of the dough, and make my own little pie. Such wonderful memories, and there are times when I wish I could relive some of them. Your grandma's baking sounds delicious. Homemade biscuits ... yum. Thanks again, gabs. I really appreciate your stopping by. Hugs.

I remember those days too of licking the bowl, it was so much fun. I don't bake and I don't have anyone to bake for me, so that part of my life is over lol. Just as well at my size, I really do not need the extra calories.

Hi winterose,
It was lots of fun, and there are many times when I wish I could 'go back there.' I don't bake anymore, even though I could. My daughter loves to do this though, as I did at her age. She doesn't get the chance too often, due to her busy schedule. I don't 'need' the baking either, but it's nice to have a treat once in awhile. Thanks so much for your response.

Hi someonesmom:)
That does bring back childhood memories. My brother and I each got to lick a beater filled with the cake batter. I don't think there was anything better.
I also let my son do the same. I would love to have your daughters recipe. A chocolate chip banana cake sounds delicious.

Hi OURDEW,
It's great to see you. Actually I was thinking about you recently, as I don't believe you've been around as much. Most here agree, that licking the bowl, spoon, beater etc., is the best part of baking. I hope you enjoy the recipe. The cake turns out nice and moist. Thanks so much for sharing. Take care.

THat's the best part about baking! LOL...my mom used to let us do that and lick the spatula etc. I do have triggers.....like smelling bread baking. My mom used to bake all the bread for the week on Sat. that night we would all have fresh hot buns with peanut butter on them for supper....she would take the leftover dough and fry it in a frying pan and put sugar and cinnamon on it.....we always looked forward to Saturday and the homemade bread!

I think it's the best part too. The homemade bread sounds delicious. That's one of the few things I don't remember my mom baking. Your memory of her use for the leftover bread dough, has brought something to mind though. My mom used to use the leftover pie crust scraps in a similar way. She'd roll the dough out, then spread it with butter, and sprinkle on brown sugar and cinnamon. She'd then roll it up, cut it into little pinwheels, and bake it. So yummy. Thanks so much for your response.

Sounds delicious...I have to get out of the way once I put the batter into the pan...My husband and grandkids fight over who is going to lick the bowl....Oh!! And I forgot my two dogs...they always get a lick of it too!!
My grama was always baking but she did it before we woke up in the morning so all the dishes were done.. We would wake up to the smell of banana bread or some cake that she was baking...Never got to lick the bowl....but everything was so delicious.....

Hi Feona,
My sister and I used to do the same thing, so our mom always made sure we both got our fair share.
I loved waking up to the smell of something delicious cooking too. That doesn't happen too much these days though. Thanks so much for sharing here.

This brought back memories. Whenever my mom baked, my brothers and I would always shout, "Can I lick the bowl?". We were just little and it was a big thing for us. My dad who was a very sarcastic man, would often say, "just shut up and flush it." Hadn't thought of that in years but this discussion just got me chuckling. Thanks, someonesmom!
