Trading Honesty and Integrity for Nothing... Stealing Political Yard Signs?

Jared's Bush/Cheney Sign - Jared with his Bush/Cheney Sign. Don't they look so happy together?

A long time ago, when I was a kid, one of my scout masters was talking to us about shoplifting (more than likely because one of us got caught, but I digress), he asked us what honesty and integrity meant to us. Of course, we gave him the "sunday school" answers... "oh, it means everything"... or, "what good is someone who can't be trusted", or other answers common to 13 year old boys when talking to adults using situations as "object lessons". As a teenager, the lesson was pretty lost on me... but it did stay tucked somewhere in my memory until it dared venture out again. Again was after High School, when I was a little more interested in what honesty, integrity and name meant to me. I think about that question a lot nowadays, and have passed the lesson on to my kids (who fortunately had much more integrity in their teen years as their old man did in his)... but they were (and still are) every bit as political as I am. This will be 3 of my kids' first presidential election. They are pretty excited about finally getting to participate. My youngest son is a George Bush supporter from way back. 8 years ago, his Elementary School did one of those "mock" election activities, to help kids learn about how elections work. Jared was the only kid in the school who actually campaigned for a candidate. While the other classes count turned out to be basically a reflection of how the parents of the kids in the class voted, most of Jared's class voted for Bush. (he was pretty persuasive even for a 10 year old). This year, while he's been excited about participating for real finally, he's been a bit disappointed in the choices. I mean, his mom and I had Reagan to vote for our first time. His oldest brother got to vote for Bush...and the fact he got to do it against Kerry made it seem even more exciting. But after the good candidates started falling by the wayside in the Republican primary, he started wondering how he was going to keep up his excitement. He found a way to express his support for the Republican party, even if he didn't like who the nominee was.... He had kept our "Bush/Cheney" Yard Sign from 4 years ago. He put it out front for all to see. It actually lasted longer than we expected. There is a coffee house around the corner that is a favorite among the more left leaning residents of Sheboygan. We knew the lefties wouldn't put up with a Bush/Cheney sign for long... it did last about a month though, so I'll give them credit for their restraint, even if it was temporary. ;~D When he came home from work the other night, he noticed a bare spot in the grass where his sign used to be. At first he suspected his sister pulling a prank (which she isn't above mind you). He confronted her, but soon realized that it was just wishful thinking... the sign had been stolen. That go me thinking about my old scout master and his question again. Every election year people put out signs backing or slamming one candidate or the other. Every year these signs get stolen, destroyed, defaced, spindled or otherwise messed with. It makes me wonder about the honesty and integrity of some people. I mean, if you are going to trade them for something, make it something worth.. well... something. To trade them for nothing is just pathetic and sad. ;~D

I think it is impossible to trade honesty and integrity for something that is worth something, especially if you are talking about stealing. Don't people tend to steal material things? And if it's material, can't it also be bought? Honesty and Integrity can not be bought. Trust can not be bought. Good friends and people who care about and/or look up to you can not be bought. If you compromise your honesty and integrity, you risk losing good friends. You risk losing the respect of people who look up to you. Is there any material thing that is "worth something" compared to all you risk to lose when compromising honesty and integrity? I think not, so it is impossible to trade honesty and integrity for anything that is "worth something"...Just my thoughts.

and yet, when you steal something, you trade if for the price of that item. If you lie, you trade if for what you hope to get from the lie. If a person is willing to do that for nothing, then that is all their honesty and integrity is worth to them. But I do see your point too.

You know a lot of people wouldn't consider for a moment that was stealing, and that is a lot of what's wrong in this country today. Kid's have fewer and fewer morals, not because they are bad kids, but because their parents had no morals to teach them.Had we stolen a tooth pick laying on the ground we would have been whipped to within an inch of our lives, people now think you can take what you wantas long as you have a good enough reason. "My kids were hungry so I stole groceries", "I needed a new pair of shoes cause all the other kids at school got em" On and on....What's the next generation gonna bring, I hate to think!

Good point. Back in the 90s I worked stop loss security for a store chain... which is fancy words for "I busted shoplifters". When we busted a teenager, we first called their parents, then we called the police. I guess it wouldn't come as a surprise to you that in most cases, the went off on us, making excuse after excuse for their precious little angels... even with the evidence sitting on the table in front of them.

Sad, ain't it? They say the world hasn't changed.. or society that is.. but one used to be able to never lock their doors! Imagine! [What happened?]

His oldest brother got to vote for Bush...and the fact he got to do it against Kerry made it seem even more exciting. Now I am going to get to the rest of your discussion but I had to address this quote. What is the difference between Bush 2004 and McCain 2008, Kerry 2004 and Obama 2008? To me there is no difference between Bush and McCain, but Kerry was actually better than Obama. So using the logic of the opponent make the other candidate more exciting, McCain is an easy choice. Onto sing stealing, defacing and other things like that. A have a neighbor in my sub-division that has a big Obama sign, it makes my McCain/Palin sign look small. They made it out of wood, at could be used as a billboard after the election, not really but close to it. I have to drive by this sign every day. It would be very tempting to go over there when they are not home and spray paint McCain 08 on the sign, but that would not be the Christian thing to do. Oh well I have my sign they have their sign.

Ah, the old 'McSame" rhetoric. Read McCain's website instead of relying on the incompetent press for information. The war in Iraq and the need for troops in countries other than the US are two of only a few issues they agree on. The only reason the Democrats are pushing the whole "McSame" thing is, they have been running against him continuously for 8 years now and they can't seem to accept the fact that no matter what happens, Bush won't be running again. I'm not sure why they feel the need to run against Bush since they never once one against him. lol
