It is in the Philippines that christmas is celebrated the longest! As soon as September 1's sun rose, christmas carols are played in radios and TV. The day before that, my husband bought new carols' cd to be played in the car. Xmas decors are out, my santas on their places now. My cousin's house is fully decorated when I got there with no nook or corner was without a decor. Tv programs started with the christmas count down. The kids are ecstatic of the thought that it will be in a little of more 100 days more to go. Christmas in the Philippines is joyous and love is always in the air. No matter how hard times can be... christmas is celebrated with spirit. Since we belong to a big family, gifts could not be accomodated in my inlaws living room even if the place is big. We usually exchange gifts on Dec 24 mid night. Each of us may get more than 10 gifts. Food will be plentiful which we eat after opening our gifts. Most of us Filipinos hear the midnight mass but our family hear mass on the morning of Dec25 because we have lots of little kids who can be irritable in the church at midnight. We sleep around 4am. Wake up around 11am then hear mass. We go back for lunch that would mean stuffing one self. We need to prepare because other relatives plus the god children will be arriving. There will be lots of reunions to attend to which means more gifts and more food. We usually take down christmas decors after Jan6. The epiphany. I have started with my gift list. as soon as we could go home to Manila, I'd be buying them. Gifts doesnt have to be expensive. Something useful and practical. Definitely though, it will be toys for the kids. My own kids are big now, they usually get money as gifts...they will then be buying new cellphones or ipods.
