i have seen cars that were smoking go in and pass where as my best friends car had the check engine light on for no reason (the light had a short or something because she had it checked and it was ok but the light wouldnt go off) and it failed.. if a smoky car can pass then how is that helping?? heck i would have failed it on visual only!! you think all these test are helping as a whole? or just another way to get taxpayers money??

I don't know if they do any good because I don't think they make those 18-wheelers get exhaust emissions tests! The cars we see smoking are most likely not on the road long enough to get tested again. That usually indicates a pretty serious, and expensive, problem with the car. I now live in Virginia where we have to get our entire cars inspected every year, not just the emissions every two years. This seems to have an impact because they'll fail you in a flash unless you have your car in tip-top shape.

what are they testing for? If is is carbon dioxide emissions from the oil it will not pick up something else, you always have to know what is being tested.
